Garden member Mehry Safaeian wanted to share these photos of this spicebush swallowtail butterfly larva that she found on her spicebush in the garden. The photo with the blue gloves shows the younger larva. They usually cover themselves by pulling parts of the leaves over themselves (like hiding in a blanket!) In the other photo, you can see an older version of the larva - they have fake eyes to scare predators!
Mehry shares this with us as a testimony to Penn Hills Community Garden's cultivating service to the community and opportunities to serve other creatures. Thank you Mehry for growing the spicebush for a host plant, documenting the new life and sharing it with us!

Huge thanks to Sandy Feather for a very fun, informative pest walk in the garden tonight!

What a great event! We had over 20 kids and their grown-ups come hear local author Audra Azoury-Sommer read her book “I Am More Than Just A Weed” and then lead the kids on a scavenger hunt that ended with pizza, watermelon and treats!
