Tough Enough To Wear Pink is celebrating 20 years at the Pendleton Round-Up, marking two decades of bringing our community together in support of local breast cancer patients and survivors.

Pendleton Foundation Trust awarded a grant this year to help TETWP purchase a custom shade banner and two flags that will become lasting, highly visible symbols of this Round-Up tradition. The banner will hang at the Round-Up grounds each August and September, while the flags will be raised on TETWP Thursday and used at events throughout the year.

But behind all that pink is an even more meaningful story.

Over the past 20 years, 100% of the funds raised by Pendleton’s TETWP campaign have stayed local. Proceeds support St. Anthony Cancer Clinic, Eastern Oregon Cancer Network and the Kickin’ Cancer New Beginnings program, helping provide everything from post-surgical garments and wigs to transportation, lodging, exercise, massage therapy and nutritional support.

Once again, on Thursday, September 17, thousands at the Round-Up grounds will wear pink in support of local breast cancer patients and survivors.

Pendleton Foundation Trust is honored to help make this important Pendleton tradition even more visible as it begins its next 20 years.

What does it mean to leave a legacy?

With the recent passing of Dolly Parton, much will rightly be said about her extraordinary talent and spirit. But another part of her legacy will continue for generations: what she gave.

Her philanthropy reflected the people, places and experiences that shaped her. She invested in children and education, helped communities in times of need, supported causes she cared about, and created the Imagination Library, which grew from a personal family story into a program reaching millions of children.

As students head back to school, we’re excited to highlight a grant made last spring to Washington Elementary School to replace broken and out-of-tune xylophones and metallophones used in its elementary music program.

Washington’s music instruction is rooted in a hands-on approach that brings together music, movement, rhythm, storytelling and creative exploration. Instruments like xylophones give students a chance to learn by doing, building musical skills while encouraging creativity, collaboration and confidence.

The new instruments will provide students with reliable, in-tune equipment for daily classroom learning and performances throughout the school year.

Grant Tip: Build a Budget That Tells the Whole Story

A strong project needs a strong budget. Your budget helps us understand not only what the project will cost, but how you plan to make it happen.

When preparing your Pendleton Foundation Trust grant application:

• Provide an itemized project budget. Clearly show all anticipated income and expenses related to the project.

• Show the full funding picture. We encourage applicants to seek support from multiple sources rather than relying on Pendleton Foundation Trust to fund the entire project. Include other grants, organizational funds, donations, fundraising or in-kind support, and indicate if it is secured, planned, or pending.

• Include competitive bids. For capital expenditures, two competitive bids are requested whenever possible. If that's not practical, simply provide a reasonable explanation.

• Think local. When possible, we encourage applicants to purchase project materials and services from Pendleton merchants.

• Don't forget your financial statements. Financial statements are required for all applicant organizations and help provide context for your request.

A clear, realistic and complete budget shows that you've done your homework and helps our Board see how a Pendleton Foundation Trust grant fits into the bigger picture of making your project a reality.

Pendleton Foundation Trust recently awarded a grant to the Oregon Robotics Tournament and Outreach Program (ORTOP) to help expand robotics opportunities for Pendleton students, from elementary school through high school.

The grant for materials and supplies will help launch new FIRST LEGO League teams at the elementary level and strengthen existing FIRST Tech Challenge programs for middle and high school students.

There is already exciting momentum around robotics in Pendleton. Local teams have advanced to state competition, and Pendleton High School has earned the FIRST Inspire Award, recognizing excellence in engineering, teamwork and community engagement.

Just as important, dedicated local educators and volunteers are helping make sure these opportunities continue to grow. By providing resources to start new teams and strengthen existing ones, this grant helps create a pathway for Pendleton students to explore STEM through hands-on learning, collaboration, creativity and problem-solving.

One of the strongest parts of any grant application is explaining why your project matters.

Instead of simply describing what you'll do, help us understand the difference your project will make:
• Who will benefit?
• How many people will be served?
• What need are you addressing?
• What will be different because your project happened?

The strongest applications make a clear connection between the project and its benefit to the Pendleton community.

New books are coming to the Pendleton High School library!

This spring, Pendleton Foundation Trust awarded a grant to the Pendleton School District to help refresh the PHS library’s collection.

As the way students research has changed, many traditional reference materials have been removed from the library. At the same time, budget constraints have made it difficult to regularly update the fiction collection, leaving more empty shelves and fewer of the newer books students are interested in reading.

This grant will help change that.

The library will be adding modern young adult fiction, graphic novels, books representing diverse voices and other high-interest titles that give students more reasons to pick up a book and read for enjoyment.

It’s about more than filling shelves. It’s about creating a library where students want to spend time, discover something new and find books that interest them.

The new books will be ready to welcome students back to PHS later this month.

We’re proud to support this investment in Pendleton students.

Pendleton Foundation Trust’s Fall grant cycle is now open, and we want every eligible applicant to submit the strongest proposal possible.

Here are five common mistakes that can weaken an application:

❌ Not confirming eligibility first.
Before applying, make sure your organization, project, and proposed expenses align with PFT’s grant guidelines and benefit Pendleton residents.

❌ Waiting until the last minute.
Strong applications take time to develop. Starting early allows you to gather estimates, confirm partnerships, review your budget, and ask questions before the deadline.

❌ Being too vague about the project.
Clearly explain what you plan to do, who will benefit, why the project is needed, and what will be accomplished with PFT funding.

❌ Submitting an incomplete or unrealistic budget.
Your budget should be clear, accurate, and consistent with the project description. Include realistic cost estimates and identify other funding sources or contributions when applicable.

❌ Failing to connect the request to lasting community benefit.
PFT looks for projects that make a meaningful investment in Pendleton. Help reviewers understand the tangible impact of the project and how it will serve the community over time.

Yesterday, the Pendleton Foundation Trust Board gathered for our quarterly meeting and annual retreat in the Doolittle Conference Room at the Pendleton Airport.

We spent the day conducting board business, reflecting on PFT’s work, and planning for the future, all while seated around the PFT-funded conference table, a remarkable replica of the wing of a World War II-era B-25 Mitchell bomber.

It was a productive day in a unique setting, with the added fun of watching flights arrive just outside the window.

We left energized and looking forward to the work ahead. Investing in Pendleton, together.
