In Florida, individuals receiving services through Exceptional Student Education programs age out of the system by the age of 22. Throughout high school, transition plans are written in preparation for the future, but for many, what comes next is sitting at home watching television. Although limited educational and “training” programs exist, they often exist in a vacuum. These programs are develop
ed specifically for young adults with developmental disabilities, and the only non-disabled people they interact with are staff members. Remaining at home results in limited interaction with the young adults’ peer group and with the community at large, minimizes the opportunity to improve/engage in communication or develop new skills, and increases stress for both the young adults and their families. Recognizing that we all benefit from interaction with people from a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and experiences, and understanding the critical need for family respite services, we created a “one stop shop” to provide intensive support, enrichment, and respite services for young adults with developmental disabilities and their families, enabling them to actively engage with one another, form friendships and support systems, develop strong community ties, and live more fulfilling and expansive lives. Thanks to generosity of The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community center, we have been provided with a dedicated classroom facility into which our clients were welcomed unconditionally, where these young adults have the same access to all Center classes and activities as any other member, and neither wheelchairs nor communication boards were deterrents. Illuminate Heart members participate in this community setting on an equal footing with all Community Center members, allowing intergenerational relationships to develop organically.
