Gastroenteritis: Prevention Starts at Home
With the ongoing monsoon season, cases of gastroenteritis are rising across Karachi. Contaminated food, unsafe drinking water and poor hand hygiene increase the risk of infection, especially in young children.
Most children recover well with early care at home. However, diarrhoea and vomiting can quickly lead to dehydration if not managed properly. Prompt treatment and good hygiene can help prevent complications.
To help protect your children:
- Ensure they drink boiled, filtered or bottled water.
- Start Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) as soon as diarrhoea begins and continue giving small, frequent sips to replace lost fluids.
- Continue normal feeding and breastfeeding during illness to help children recover.
- Serve freshly prepared food and thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables before eating.
- Avoid food from unhygienic sources and ensure utensils and feeding bottles are kept clean.
- Encourage children to wash their hands regularly, especially before eating, after using the toilet and after returning from outdoors.
Seek immediate medical care if your child:
- Is unable to drink or keep fluids down.
- Has persistent vomiting or frequent diarrhoea.
- Passes blood in the stool.
- Becomes unusually sleepy, difficult to wake or less responsive.
- Shows signs of severe dehydration such as very little urine, sunken eyes or extreme thirst.
Early treatment and these simple preventive measures can help children stay healthy and enjoy the monsoon season safely.
Let's keep our little ones healthy.
