Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day freedom finally reached more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

The first Juneteenth celebrations brought communities together through prayer, fellowship, music, and food. Shared meals became a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and hope, creating traditions that continue to this day.

As we reflect on the significance of Juneteenth, we also recognize that true freedom is connected to opportunity, dignity, and access to essential resources. Food has long been at the center of community, culture, and celebration, and no one should have to wonder where their next meal will come from.

At Feeding South Florida, we are committed to helping ensure that individuals and families have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. Today, we honor the history of Juneteenth, celebrate the strength of Black communities, and reaffirm our commitment to building a future where everyone has the opportunity to live healthy, nourished lives.

Together, we honor the past, support our neighbors, and work toward a future free from hunger 🧡

Preparation today helps protect tomorrow 🌪️☔

When a storm is approaching, every moment counts. Taking steps now to prepare can help reduce stress, protect your loved ones, and ensure you're ready to respond when severe weather threatens our community.

🏠 Make a Plan
Know your evacuation zone, identify safe shelter locations, map out evacuation routes, and make sure everyone in your household knows what to do in an emergency. Keep important phone numbers and documents easily accessible.

🎒 Build Your Kit
Gather enough food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and other essentials to sustain your household for at least three days. Don't forget supplies for pets and any family members with specific medical needs.

🤝 Know Your Neighbors
Strong communities weather storms better together. Check in on neighbors, especially older adults, individuals with disabilities, and families who may need extra support preparing for or recovering from a storm.

📱 Stay Informed
Monitor local weather forecasts, emergency alerts, and updates from trusted sources. Having accurate information can help you make informed decisions before, during, and after a storm.

Preparedness isn't just about protecting yourself; it's about helping our entire community stay safe and resilient. The actions you take today can make all the difference tomorrow 🧡

Across Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties, Feeding South Florida is working to nourish communities and build pathways toward a stronger future. One of the oldest food banks in the Feeding Florida network, Feeding South Florida serves more than 1.7 million individuals across South Florida through a network of over 200 partner agencies that help distribute food throughout the region.

Through programs dedicated to children, families, and seniors, Feeding South Florida helps ensure neighbors across every stage of life have access to nutritious food and vital support services. From summer and afterschool meals for children to programs designed to support older adults on fixed incomes, The food bank works to meet the unique needs of the community with dignity and care.

But the mission goes beyond providing meals. Feeding South Florida is committed to creating economic mobility and stability by connecting individuals with federal benefit application assistance, life skills support, and workforce training opportunities. Through programs like its Culinary and Warehouse Training Programs, individuals are equipped with the tools and skills needed to pursue long-term employment and financial stability.

Feeding South Florida also plays a critical role in rescuing nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste, redirecting it back into the community to help nourish neighbors in need.

By combining food assistance with education, workforce development, and community support, Feeding South Florida is not only helping meet today’s needs; it’s helping build a more resilient South Florida for tomorrow.

When the pandemic brought many volunteer opportunities to a halt, Jeanne went searching for a way to continue serving her community. That search led her to Feeding South Florida, and she hasn’t looked back since.

Over the years, Jeanne has become a dedicated presence at Feeding South Florida, especially in the pantry, where she connects directly with neighbors seeking support. For her, volunteering is about more than providing food; it’s about offering dignity, compassion, and human connection.

“Those are the people who make my life meaningful,” Jeanne shared while reflecting on the families she meets each week. “There’s nothing better than doing something for someone else.”

Through volunteers like Jeanne, Feeding South Florida continues to nourish communities across South Florida while reminding neighbors that they are not alone. 🧡

Hurricane season is here, and preparing early can make all the difference. 🌧️🌀

At Feeding South Florida, we encourage families across South Florida to take action now, before a storm is on the horizon. Preparing early means you’re not caught in the last-minute rush when stores are crowded, and supplies are limited. It gives you time to gather essentials such as non-perishable food, water, medications, and batteries, while also ensuring your emergency plan and evacuation routes are in place.

Most importantly, early preparation brings peace of mind. When you’ve already taken steps to get ready, you can focus on staying safe and supporting those around you when it matters most. Be sure to follow our page for timely updates throughout the season, along with other trusted and reputable news sources. 📲

Stay safe. Stay ready. Together, we can weather any storm 🧡
