The Carpenter’s Boat Shop is pleased to announce that Matthew Jacobs, an experienced preservationist for the National Park Service, will join the Boat Shop Team in mid-August as the nonprofit’s new Executive Director. The appointment was announced by Board President, Abby Rowe, who said, “Matt's thoughtful leadership and his many talents will make him an excellent steward” of the Boat Shop’s mission – “Building Boats, Nurturing Lives, and Helping Others.” Matt has an impressive background that includes military service during the Iraq War and working to restore the historic homes of several earlier U.S. presidents. The son of a builder who learned the art of carpentry from his father at an early age, Matt is now a pacifist, a practicing Quaker, and a devoted husband and father. Please take a moment to read the full announcement and help us offer a warm welcome to Matt and his family when they make their way to the Boat Shop in mid-August.

The happiest sanders I’ve ever seen! Last week some apprentices and staff spent time in restoration sanding a Catspaw Dinghy. Echo really wanted to be involved in but didn’t help much! Nice work team ⛵️

Last Thursday the apprentices and staff participated in the Elmer Tarr Roadside clean up! We have been participating in this service project for many years and love helping Tarrnation! Thank you Katheryn and Claire for organizing this wonderful event and Linda for bringing us snacks! We were able to pick up 32 bags of trash! 🗑️ 💪

Ear and eye protection on! The apprentices and staff had their first service project of the season with CHIP (Community Housing Improvement Project) helping split and process firewood for their fuel efficiency program. This program helps provide those in need of heat during the colder months. Thank you Brittany Gill (Program Manager) and Jack Meehan (Master Wood Chipper) for all you do!

Passing the torch—and the drawknife. 🪵⚓️

For the next few weeks, we are incredibly honored to have our founder, Bobby Ives, back in the shop. He’s leading our newest class of apprentices through their very first skiff build.

There is something truly special about learning the lines of a boat from the person who laid the foundation of this shop over 40 years ago. We are so grateful to Bobby for sharing not just his world-class expertise, but the stories and spirit that make the Boat Shop what it is today.
