The US Air Force is now offering pilots up to $600,000 to stay.

But a growing number are still leaving.

At first glance, the pay doesn’t look bad. Mid-career military pilots can earn well over $120,000, with senior officers pushing past $200,000 when benefits are included.

But the gap starts to open fast.

Airline pilots are now earning $250,000, $350,000, and in some cases over $500,000 a year flying long-haul aircraft.

And that gap compounds over time.

A pilot who leaves early starts building seniority immediately, which is where airline pay really takes off. Over a career, that can mean millions more in total earnings.

But money isn’t the only reason.

In the Air Force, flying often becomes a smaller part of the job.

As pilots move up, many are pulled into leadership roles, admin work, and deployments that keep them away from the cockpit.

At an airline, flying is the job.

Schedules are more predictable. There’s no deployment cycle. And when the flight ends, the work usually ends with it.

That difference is starting to outweigh even large retention bonuses.

The Air Force is trying to slow the exits with cash.

Airlines are pulling pilots away with something bigger.

Control over their time, their career, and how much they actually fly.
