As part of its early planning process, the Oktoberfest committee recently reviewed and approved several funding applications for local projects, made possible through proceeds from last year’s event. This year, three projects were selected to receive support, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing community spaces and experiences.

Among the recipients is Pelican Rapids’ Peteyville, which will receive $5,000 toward the creation of a giant snowman—an exciting addition that is sure to bring joy to residents and visitors during the holidays. The City of Erhard has been awarded $2,500 to support a new community mural project, an initiative aimed at celebrating local culture and beautifying public spaces. In addition, $2,500 has been granted for new playground equipment at the Erhard park, following an application submitted by the Erhard 4th of July Committee.

These contributions highlight the Octoberfest Committee’s ongoing mission to reinvest in the community and support projects that bring people together.

Community members interested in getting involved with the Octoberfest Committee are warmly encouraged to join. The next meeting is scheduled for May 21 at 5:00 p.m. in the Pelican Library meeting room. New participants are always welcome as the committee continues to plan for another memorable Octoberfest season.

Meet Mr. Oktoberfest - Rudy Martinez!

Rudy Martinez’s story is one rooted in community, perseverance, and service. Born outside the United States, Rudy and his family immigrated to the welcoming town of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, in 1997. The move marked the beginning of a lifelong connection with a community that would shape his character, values, and purpose. As a young immigrant, Rudy quickly embraced the opportunities and challenges that came with adapting to a new country. Through hard work, determination, and the support of caring teachers and neighbors, he found his place within the Pelican Rapids school system—an experience that laid the foundation for his future in public service and leadership.

A proud alumnus of Pelican Rapids High School, Class of 2007, Rudy’s journey exemplifies the spirit of the community he calls home. During his high school years, he was known for his commitment both in and out of the classroom, his leadership qualities, and his drive to give back. After graduation, Rudy attended St. Cloud State University, where he pursued higher education with the same dedication that defined his earlier years. His time at St. Cloud State not only broadened his academic and professional horizons but also deepened his understanding of public service, finance, and community engagement.

Today, Rudy proudly serves as the Finance Director for Pelican Rapids Public Schools (ISD #548)—a role that perfectly blends his passion for numbers with his devotion to the community that raised him. In this capacity, he oversees the district’s financial operations, ensuring that every dollar is used effectively to support students, staff, and the district’s long-term mission. His leadership emphasizes transparency, fiscal responsibility, and a steadfast commitment to ensuring that the schools of Pelican Rapids remain strong and sustainable for generations to come.

Beyond his professional role, Rudy continues to dedicate his time to civic and extracurricular involvement. He serves on the Planning Commission Committee for the City of Pelican Rapids, contributing his analytical skills and community insight to help shape the future of local development. In addition, he plays an active role in youth athletics as a Girls Varsity Soccer Coach, mentoring student-athletes and instilling in them the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. His ability to balance fiscal leadership with community engagement reflects his deep belief that service extends far beyond the office.

While his professional and civic accomplishments are notable, Rudy considers his greatest achievement to be his family. He is a devoted husband to his wife, Kate, and a proud father to his two daughters, Socorro and Esperanza. They are his daily motivation and the heart behind his continued efforts to make Pelican Rapids a better place to live, learn, and grow.

Rudy’s journey—from immigrant roots to educational leader—embodies the American story of resilience, gratitude, and giving back. His life’s work stands as a testament to what can be achieved through hard work, faith in community, and a deep love for family.

Meet Mrs. Oktoberfest - Dana Syverson!

I am very excited and honored to be Mrs. Oktoberfest 2025!

A little about me: I am originally from Mahnomen, where I graduated High School. I went on to earn a degree in Elementary Education from Bemidji State University. After graduating from BSU in 1999, I married my husband, Ryan, and we made our home in Pelican Rapids, where we proudly raised our two children, Abby and Brody. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, shopping, traveling and summer days at the lake.

This year marks my 27th year of teaching Kindergarten! I spent the first 13 years of my career in Perham and am now in my 14th year at Viking Elementary. “Everything I need to know, I learned in Kindergarten!” truly reflects my heart as an educator.

As a teacher, wife of a former coach and teacher, and mom of two active kids, you’ve probably seen me on the sidelines, in the stands, at the track, on the course, or out on the field cheering on the Vikings. Watching my children compete, from high school to college, has brought me endless pride and joy.

“Pelican Rapids sure can make you feel at home!” I am so grateful to call this amazing community home. Throughout my husband’s brain cancer battle and in the two years since his passing, this town has wrapped our family in love and support. It has become my mission to keep Ryan’s light shining.

In his memory, I started the “Be The Light” Scholarship, awarded to graduating seniors pursuing careers in education. Thanks to Bell Bank’s “Pay It Forward” program, I was also able to help install Buddy Benches on both elementary playgrounds in memory of Faith Westby and Ryan — a place where children can be a friend and make a friend.

My hope is to continue finding ways to give back, pay it forward, and raise awareness for brain cancer, one act of light and kindness at a time.
