Meet Young Scholar Lynlea Shiver! ❤️🐾

Lynlea is from Pelham, Georgia, and attends Pelham High School, where she proudly supports the Hornets. She was inspired to join the Young Scholars Program to prepare for a future in the agricultural industry through research and community engagement.

This summer, Lynlea is especially excited to meet new people and learn from agricultural professionals about the research projects they are passionate about. She is mentored by Dr. Claudia Dunkley, who is helping guide her journey as a Young Scholar.

Fun fact: Outside of academics, Lynlea enjoys showing pigs.

We're excited to see all that Lynlea accomplishes during her Young Scholars experience!

Summer is in full swing, but the learning doesn’t stop! ☀️

Today, our agriculture teachers partnered with the Boys & Girls Club for an A-Moo-zing morning celebrating Dairy Month. Students had the opportunity to taste test a variety of dairy products, make their own butter, and learn about the importance of the dairy industry. 🐄

Last week, Mrs. Edwards worked with campers at Camp Crosspoint, leading hands-on agricultural activities and helping students build new skills while having fun. 💪

We’re thankful for opportunities to share agriculture with students throughout the summer and can’t wait for what’s next!

We can’t wait to see how her agricultural science skills grow through the UGA Tifton Young Scholars Program this summer. 🌱🔬

We were able to get this garden in on the very last day of school, and I could not be prouder of the student's kindness, helpfulness, and leadership in helping get it installed. Pelham High School placed their Burrows & Bobwhites garden at the entrance to the ag hallway, where students will pass it on their way to class. That means habitat education will be visible every day. This garden is a reminder that conservation does not have to be far away or in the woods, it starts in the classroom, and is even just right outside the classroom door. Hopefully the visual will remind everyone that 90% of Georgia is privately owned. Informed landowners make the best stewards.

🪶 Native Habitat Takes Root at Pelham Ag 🌾

Today, we were visited by Ms. Audrey Hawk with Quail Forever as we installed a native habitat demonstration raised bed on campus through the Burrows & Bobwhites conservation education program. The bed was planted with native grasses and flowering plants that support pollinators and Georgia upland wildlife, including species like bobwhite quail and gopher tortoises.

This project gives our students a hands-on opportunity to learn more about conservation, native ecosystems, and the importance of habitat restoration right here in South Georgia. We are excited to watch this space grow and continue serving as an extension of the classroom for our students! 🌻🐢🐦

🔬🐾 Pelham Ag Students take on UGA Tifton 🐾🔬

Today, some of our ag students traveled to UGA Tifton to learn more about the role of UGA and Extension in agriculture, explore post secondary opportunities, tour research labs, and complete water quality labs and testing.

Thank you to Dr. Barry Croom and Mrs. Katy Warren for taking the time to host our students today!

For our last FFA event of the school year, our middle and high school FFA members bounced over to Recoil Trampoline Park! 💙💛

🌱🐖 Salad and Swine 🐖🌱

Today, Mr. Allen’s horticulture class harvested fresh vegetables from our raised beds and enjoyed the fruits (and veggies!) of their labor with a salad bar. Over the last few days, his vet science class also got a closer look at anatomy through a fetal pig dissection.

Even as the semester begins to wind down, our ag students are still engaged in valuable, hands-on learning experiences that are both educational and memorable.
