A Less Plastic Life

A Less Plastic Life The goal of this Page is to help reduce the amount of "Single Use Plastic Items" that have woven their way into our everyday lives.

"Single Use Plastic Item" is a term that refers to anything that is designed to be used once and then thrown "away" -- only to end up in a landfill, backyard, local waterway or larger body of water such as a river or ocean. Of course, there is no real "away" where plastic items go that does not cause immediate or eventual harm to life and the environment.

Frogs for the Cure for Komen of TCU – Texas Christian University, has been polluting the Earth with annual balloon releases for the last 9 years to raise funds for Susan G. Komen. This year's event, held last Saturday, was filmed for a video that's hoped to be "the biggest breast cancer video in history". They partnered with Green River Ordinance, who plan on adding the footage to their new music video.

*Mass littering event TODAY*
For 30 years Clemson University has been trashing the Earth with balloons. It all started back in 1983 with their record breaking release of 363,729 balloons.www.tinyurl.com/clemson1983 Proud of their 'accomplishment', they decided to make it a tradition to release balloons at every home football game, sending thousands of balloons to litter the world every time the players storm the field.
Over the years Clemson's mass littering events have drawn much concern. The links included reveal the great lengths this South Carolina university has gone to defend & justify their school sanctioned littering.
Back in 2006, after receiving complaints, the president of CU asked for a report from Central Spirit. The report he received the following year was laden with balloon industry propaganda & recited the balloon industry's own bogus "study". www.archive.upstatetoday.com/?p=12631. The 5 page report was said to have squashed the "litter controversy" & their balloons "pose no threat to the environment". The administrative body approved the continuing release of the balloons.
In 2010, a group of Belton Elementary students proposed a bill www.tinyurl.com/postandcourier to protect the state reptile- the loggerhead sea turtle. Some folks at Clemson were angered by the kids,www.tinyurl.com/clemsonforum , because the bill threatened to put an end to their celebratory pollution.
Then, the Creative Inquiry www.tinyurl.com/clemsoncreative . Clemson would study distance traveled by balloons, their rate of degradation, the impact on animals from balloon consumption, and the public opinion of the balloon release.
Their 6 month study, completed in 2012,www.tinyurl.com/clemsonirwin showed that the balloons could travel hundreds of miles, they could take months to break down to a brittle stage & balloons submerged in water degraded more slowly, outlasting the study (the balloons in the river trial were lost after being "washed away"). Out of 5,600 tagged balloons, only 40 were found. 81% of the balloons retained their mass in large pieces, thus, "potentially posing a threat to wildlife". The public opinion poll revealed balloon releases during pre-game were of less value to sports patrons than other aspects of the game day event & 42% believed latex balloon releases are dangerous for the environment.
Despite all the information from their very own study & after killing 20 quail hens, 20 catfish, 15 sliders (turtles, which still had balloon remnants bunched in their guts) it was shocking to find their conclusion was - "This study did not indicate an observable impact on wildlife or the environment from latex balloon releases..."

Today Clemson Athletics will continue with their mass littering events. We believe it is high time Clemson University stop contributing to this: www.balloonsblow.org/photo-gallery

*Mass Littering Event Today*
At the first touchdown of every home game Nebraska Huskers has been releasing thousands of balloons. This time honored tradition began over 60 years ago. There was some concern over Helium supplies in 2012, but UNL felt those issues were resolved and continue with their regular mass littering events. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln also includes balloon releases at homecoming events, memorials, and celebrations. We understand the University is making efforts to be more sustainable. However, wasting a finite resource and tossing thousands of pieces of trash to litter the countryside and endanger wildlife is a tradition that needs to come to an end.

We think it is a great idea to save trees by not having a phone book in every room but are we really to believe that they care so much about the planet when their hotels are stuffed with single use disposables such as those in the photos. Not shown in the pictures, was the sea of plastic in the breakfast area. Styrofoam plates, more plastic lined cups and plenty of plastic cutlery to mention a few. I am not saying that it is any different at most other major chains but please don't try and green-wash us. Thanks

Maybe a new approach will give us a better understanding about the possible dangers of BPA.

US scientists have challenged ways of assessing the safety of food contact chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in a fresh research article.

Poor tree, not the appropriate holiday decor. I spotted it on Monday, came back to clean up today, because you know the plastic bags are not going anywhere! And.... I knew NOBODY else would clean it up! I had a small ladder, but I was still not able to get it all. So much on the tree it looked like snow. I'm glad I was able to get some of it! Unfortunately the rest will be there for a very long time.
Thanks big brother Max!

Two windy days in a row, so the landfill near my house needs to put up extra fencing to catch plastic shopping bags. So nice!
