Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the largest amphibious military operation in history (also known as βthe longest dayβ).
On June 6, 1944, over 130,000 soldiers landed at dawn on five Normandy beaches. This extraordinary military operation, known as "Operation Overlord," was executed under the leadership of American General Dwight Eisenhower. Its aim was to liberate the beaches and towns of Normandy from the German army (which was occupying part of France at the time) in preparation for the arrival of over 2,000,000 Allied soldiers.
By the end of August 1944, the Allies had reached the Seine River, Paris was liberated and the Germans had been removed from northwestern France, effectively concluding the Battle of Normandy. The Allied forces then prepared to enter Germany, where they would meet up with Soviet troops moving in from the east. preventing Hi**er from sending troops from France to build up his Eastern Front against the advancing Soviets.
Just under a year later, on May 8, 1945, N**i Germany capitulated, officially ending the Second World War.
