We Mourn the Loss of a Valued Board Member

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of SisterQueen Deborah Caroline Nelson, a courageous and dedicated member of our board. Her unwavering commitment to our Pan African mission and tireless advocacy were a source of strength and inspiration to us all. SisterQueen Deborah played an instrumental role in supporting our goals and advancing our work. She will be profoundly missed, both for her leadership and for the compassion she brought to everything she did. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

The Drammeh Institute honors brother Gil Scott-Heron on the anniversary of his birthday with clips of an exhibition done in his honor, featuring the works of Stacey Ann Ellis at the Drammeh Center in 2018. Ms. Ellis first heard Gil when she was a budding artist and college student. Still a teen, little did she know that his music would impact her life and become more meaningful to her at strategic moments. She says: “His music helped me to become a fully grown Black woman."

On Saturday, June 25th, The Drammeh Institute celebrated our 30th anniversary in no better way than with our friends, partners, and supporters. This day was also an opportunity for us to honor those thought-changers of distinction who have paved revolutionary roads in the area of culture, art, and politics.
Alfred J. Santana, the multi-media artist and film veteran, and The December 12th Movement, the Pan African human rights group were recognized for the importance of their work, which allowed the Institute to document major accountings for the new millennium.

It was a lovely sunny afternoon with a clear view of NYC's skyline. The program commenced with Libation by our 1st Vice President, a Sacred Sister member, Deborah C. Nelson, followed by the phenomenal Saxophonist, Flautist, Composer, Arranger and Educator - T.K. Blue with Greg Murphy, and finished off with Award-winning Performance/Recording artist, Self-empowerment Speaker and Educator, Gha'il Rhodes Benjamin with Carlton Abrams. ASÈ
