Sealed for play, and we mean thatā¦When working with a kinetic textile like a slip-on canvas shoe, the goal is to maintain the fabricās natural flexibility while ensuring pigment adhesion. If the paint is too rigid, the mechanical stress of walking will cause it to snap and delaminate.
I. Prep
Begin with a clean, debris-free surface. The most vital technical step is mixing your acrylic paint with a fabric medium at a 1:1 ratio. This lowers the viscosity, allowing the pigment to pe*****te the weave rather than forming a brittle plastic shell on top. Always apply in multiple thin layers.
II. Thermal
After allowing the work to air-dry for 24 hours, you must heat-set the polymer to the fibers. Use a hairdryer on high heat for five minutes to drive out residual moisture, followed by five minutes under a UV light to complete the chemical cure.
III. Hydrophobic Sealing
To achieve water resistance, apply two light mists of a water-based fabric protector or a flexible acrylic finisher. Avoid hardware-grade clear coats, as they are too inelastic for footwear. Allow the shoes to cure for a full 48 hours before use.
