IDNR will host sensory hours at Conservation World again this year at the 2026 Illinois State Fair, offering visitors an opportunity to explore in a quieter, more calming environment for children and adults with sensory processing sensitivities. As you celebrate Independence Day this week, please remember that not everyone experiences fireworks the same way.

For many individuals with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, PTSD, dementia, or sensory sensitivities, unexpected fireworks can cause significant anxiety and distress.

If you're planning to set off fireworks at home, consider giving your neighbors a heads-up if possible. A little notice can help families prepare with headphones, comfort items, or alternative plans.

Small acts of kindness can make our communities more inclusive for everyone.

FOURTH OF JULY ACTIVITIES? - ADULTS, PLAY 'TAG YOU'RE IT!'

Research shows that nearly half of children with autism will wander away from safe environments, particularly during holiday gatherings or events. They may head to ponds, lakes, or other bodies of water regardless of its temperature or type.

Make others aware and tag one responsible adult to monitor your loved one at all times for an agreed-upon period of time.
