There’s something kind of profound hiding in a kids’ jazz class. Some days you’re the one in control, leading the movement. Other days you’re just along for the ride, getting swept up in something bigger than you. And honestly? That’s life. The beauty doesn’t depend on which one you are that day.

On International Children’s Day, that feels worth celebrating—because dance teaches kids exactly this. How to lead and how to let go. How to move and be moved. How to make something beautiful whether or not everything’s in their control.

And the benefits run deep. Dance builds confidence and creativity, strengthens focus and memory, helps kids regulate their emotions, and gives them a sense of belonging they’ll carry for life. The floaty scarves are just the fun part—the lessons underneath last a lot longer.

The footage above is from our jazz class, where some of our dancers are the artists, some are the medium, and all of them are making something beautiful.

Scholarships are available, and community support helps keep moments like these within reach for every child who wants them.

Today, on International Children's Day, we're celebrating the power of dance education, mentorship, and the doors that open when a child is given room to create.

At Just The Place, dance is so much more than steps. It's discipline, confidence, teamwork, self-expression, culture, and pure joy—the kind of support system every child deserves.

The footage above, captured during a Latin jazz rehearsal, is a reminder of what happens when young people are given space to move, learn, grow, and be seen. You can feel it in every count, every turn, every grin between counts. For so many students, the arts become a doorway into confidence, community, and possibility.

Scholarships are available, and community support is what helps keep that door open.

Please consider supporting Just The Place and helping more children experience the gift of dance, education, and creative belonging.

Throwback to this beautiful penché moment at Just The Place ✨

A perfect mix of strength, flexibility, control, and artistry, because a gorgeous pose is never just a pose. It takes focus, practice, patience, and a whole lot of heart.

We love watching our students grow into their confidence, one stretch, one balance, and one brave little “let me try again” at a time.

“A museum is a space where art meets audience, where disciplines collide, and where the boundaries between forms dissolve into something new.”

Happy International Museum Day! 🩰🎨

Museums aren’t just for paintings behind glass. At their best, they’re living, breathing spaces where every art form has room to move—literally. Dance meets sculpture. Music meets installation. Movement meets visual storytelling. That interdisciplinary magic is what makes museums so vital for artists of every kind.

The shots above are from when some of our incredible adult dancers performed at the Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art—including moments warming up just outside the blackbox theater, framed by the artwork itself before stepping on stage. The performance took place inside Studio Theater in Exile, the blackbox venue tucked right within the museum.

This wasn’t our first time collaborating in that space either. Our previous performance there was part of The Conscience of a Nation, an exhibition by V.L. Cox—a powerful series rooted in human rights, equality, and her nationally recognized ‘End Hate’ doors installation. Dance, poetry, and theater were all woven into the exhibit, with performances inspired directly by the work on display—including a dance suite choreographed by Sharon Simmons Wright. Sharing movement in dialogue with art that carried that much weight reminded us exactly why interdisciplinary spaces matter.

Museums like HVMOCA don’t just showcase art—they create dialogue between artists, mediums, and communities. We’re so grateful to keep returning to a place built for that kind of exchange.

“The most essential thing in dance discipline is devotion.” - Merce Cunningham

This preview from our contemporary dancers’ rehearsal captures that so beautifully.

The emotion we see in a performance does not appear by accident. It is built through focus, repetition, listening, trust, patience, correction, and the courage to keep returning to the work.

Devotion and discipline together help bring forward stories that are felt before they are spoken.

These students are learning more than choreography. They are learning how to move with intention, how to express what words cannot always hold, and how to pour their spirit into something shared.

We are so proud of the care, maturity, and heart they are bringing into this piece, and we cannot wait for you to experience the full performance.

A strong mindset does not appear overnight. It is practiced.

In dance class, young people learn how to keep going when something feels hard. They learn how to focus, how to try again, how to work as a team, how to trust their bodies, and how to take pride in progress instead of perfection.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we are celebrating the ways dance supports not only physical growth, but emotional strength, confidence, self-expression, and a healthier mindset.

This footage was captured during rehearsal in our Pom Pom class as students prepare for our upcoming recital.

Mark your calendars!

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re joining the “hallelujah” trend, where people share the little things that bring them joy, comfort, relief, and pleasure.

For us, that looks like moments from our contemporary dance class: pointed toes, big feelings getting danced out, kids finding their confidence, friendships forming, and those tiny moments when movement turns into pure happiness.

At Just The Place, we see every day how dance, art education, and creative expression can support youth mental health. The arts give young people healthy ways to process emotions, release stress, build self-esteem, feel connected, and discover their own voice.

Supporting youth arts education means supporting more than classes. It means helping create a safe, joyful space where young people can move, express, grow, and feel seen.

Please consider donating to help keep youth arts and dance programs accessible.
