Camp Janus is a unique recreational, therapeutic, and educational opportunity for children and young adults (ages 5-18) who have recovered or are recovering from burns.
Through an annual Summer camp experience, we offer burn survivors life skills that help them handle the challenges of their individual, lifelong recoveries. We promote an environment where burn survivors can become the best versions of themselves possible, where they can thrive in today’s world.
Camp Janus is free of charge to all participants, including transportation to and from camp from locations in Houston and Galveston. Since our founding over 30 years ago, every donation we receive has gone toward the camp. Because we are a 100% volunteer organization, our overhead costs are minimal. That means every year we can focus on improving the camp experience.
Last year was no different as we provided several firsts:
Our first professional photographer volunteered her time to upgrade the junior and senior girls’ spa day, providing professional-grade, digitally processed glamour shots—and garnering more genuine smiles than you can imagine.
Our friends at Camp for All provided us with a first trial of the personal DJ audio mixing experience and digital photography session, providing a great cutting-edge learning experience and a pretty neat keepsake for our campers.
The Houston Fire Department cadets, the Burton, TX volunteer fire department, and the inflatables sponsored by our donors, once again made “Water Day” a highlight of the weekend.
All of this was in addition to typical camp events like eating s’mores, fishing, rock wall climbing, canoeing, basketball, barnyard, horseback riding, arts and crafts, swimming, and, of course, Saturday skit night.
As you can imagine, this makes for a pretty full four days for campers and volunteers alike. But when you see that first time camper— like Jenna, who arrived on Thursday quietly reserved, afraid of her own voice, embarrassed by her burns, and intentionally standing in the shadows—become the same camper who is now singing along at the top of her lungs with her cabin mates while standing center stage during the skit night, that’s when you know it’s all worth it.
