Aloha y'all 2023 Northern KY Young Marines Pearl Harbor Remembrance Trip 2023

The small but mighty Northern Kentucky unit has spent the past year learning about the Pearl Harbor attacks, while simultaneously fundraising for a trip to the site of the attacks. We are blessed with hard-charging Young Marines and a large group of people and groups who support us in this quest.

Memories from the trip: YM/MGySgt Abby Smith

My favorite memory from this week was participating in the USS Missouri ceremony on the morning of December 7th. This is the morning the attack on Pearl Harbor took place. During this ceremony every Young Marine aboard lined up behind the railing of the ship, so we were overlooking the harbor. We stood at attention from 7:48 to 8:10. That was the time the attack began to the time the USS Arizona sunk. During this time there was a flyover directly over the harbor and the USS Missouri. At 7:55, five other Young Marines and I raised the colors on the USS Missouri. After this a battleship began moving across the harbor and all of the Young Marines honored it by saluting as it passed. It was an honor to be able to witness and participate in this ceremony. This experience only lasted for a little over 20 minutes but I know I will remember it for a life time.

My favorite place we visited was the luau. It was my favorite because it was very fun and educational.

Thursday 12/7/23:
The Northern KY YoungMarines (along with other Young Marines from across the country) woke up onboard the USS Missouri (BB-63) Memorial. The morning of the anniversary of the attacks, all of the Young Marines manned the rails of the USS Missouri to watch the sunrise. At the same time, a crowd that included survivors of the attacks gathered at Pearl Harbor. We joined them in holding a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., the same time bombs began falling 82 years ago. Then, after the Young Marines were called to attention over the speakers of the USS Missouri, four F-22 jets flew overhead, with one splitting away from the rest in a “missing man formation” that honored the fallen. "Hand Salute" was called and our Young Marines held that salute while the USS DECATUR passed (with sailors lining the rails to salute the USS Missouri).
To say this was a powerful series of events is an understatement. The Young Marines and Adult Staff will never forget the opportunity to participate in such an awe-inspiring morning. Big thanks to the Marshall Schildmeyer VFW Post 6095 Latonia, KY for sponsoring our USS Missouri encampment - it was so much more than what we imagined!

I liked everything about the USS Missouri, the history, the sleep over, the fly over and ceremony. It was a great experience for history lovers like myself.

Memories from the trip: YM/Pvt Deston Barnes

My favorite part was the luau and the boy spinning fire, because it was impressive the kid was able to handle dangerous fire and I’ve never seen anything like it.

Memories from the trip: Unit Commander Lynne Arnold

The sounds. Sound of laughter, sound of silence (reverence), sound of the ocean, sound of moto cadences on the lighthouse hike, sound of "Young Marines, hand salute" over the PA on the USS Missouri, sound of compliments for our YMs, and the sound of jokes, comments, questions, explanations.

Memories from the trip: YM/ LCpl Abagail Papp

My favorite parts of the trip were the beach house, snorkeling, the luau, and raising the flag on the Missouri. The beach house was definitely one of the best decisions ever. It was so beautiful and staying by the ocean was the most therapeutic experience. Snorkeling was so cool because I was way braver than I thought I would be and I got super close to fish and now I’m not scared. The luau was probably the best part of the trip. It was in a beautiful place and it was interesting to learn about the culture and participate so much in the event. I think we all had a lot of fun dancing and making crowns and eating delicious food. The birthday cake was so good! I definitely will never forget that. Lastly, it was an honor to be chosen to raise the flag on the Missouri. It is something that will forever be in my mind and will definitely be my proudest moment of honoring our military. I also loved getting to spend my birthday in the most beautiful place I've ever been.

Memories from our trip: YM/Sgt Martin

My favorite memory this week was having my first expirience filling the billet of First Sargeant during the USS Missouri encampment. I enjoyed working alongside Master Gunnery Sargeant Nester, who served as the Sargeant Major of the encampment. It was exciting getting to motivate, instruct, and meet Young Marines from all across the country. It was a thrilling expirience on the USS Missouri, including the flyover at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor and having the opportunity to participate in the morning and evening colors. Overall I enjoyed every moment of the trip, being beyond blessed for the Northern Kentucky Young Marines and the family it has brought me.
