👂 A hearing screening is a starting point. When follow-up is recommended, families need clear results and a clear next step. It is imperarative for education systems to incorporate hearing screening programs and have safeguards in place to ensure no child's hearing is left behind and all children have the adequate access to instruction.

A new school year means new opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive. Before your child heads back to the classroom, don't forget one important health check—their hearing.

Hearing plays a vital role in learning. Children depend on it to follow instructions, understand their teachers, participate in class, build language skills, and gain confidence. Even mild hearing difficulties can impact school performance, communication, and friendships.

Take this quick checklist:

✅ Does your child often ask, "Huh?" or "Can you say that again?"
✅ Do they struggle to understand conversations in noisy places like classrooms or cafeterias?
✅ Do they need directions repeated frequently?
✅ Do they say school or other environments are "too loud"?
✅ Do they have challenges with speech, reading, learning, or attention?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, it doesn't necessarily mean your child has hearing loss—but it may be time for a professional hearing evaluation.

Could your child hear clearly but still struggle to understand what they hear? 👂💙

Every child learns differently, but sometimes the challenge isn't hearing sounds—it's how the brain processes them. Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) affects the brain's ability to interpret sound, making listening more difficult, especially in busy classrooms or noisy environments.

Here are some signs your child may benefit from an APD evaluation:

🔹 Difficulty following multi-step directions – They may remember only the first instruction or become overwhelmed by several tasks at once.

🔹 Trouble understanding speech in background noise – Classrooms, playgrounds, restaurants, or family gatherings can make conversations difficult to follow.

🔹 Frequently mishearing words – They may confuse similar-sounding words or respond with an answer that doesn't match what was said.

🔹 Reading or spelling challenges – Difficulty processing speech sounds can affect phonics, reading comprehension, and spelling.

🔹 Listening fatigue – Paying close attention all day can leave them mentally exhausted after school or social activities.

🔹 Needing extra time to respond – Their brain may simply need more time to process what they've heard before answering.

Leading the screenings is our founder, Dr. Carla Smiley, Au.D., CCC-A, FNAP—an award-winning audiologist whose own childhood experience with hearing loss inspired a lifelong mission to make hearing healthcare more accessible.

Dr. Smiley created the Tiny House Hearing Clinic on Wheels to meet people where they are, bringing professional audiology services beyond the traditional clinic and into neighborhoods that need them most.
