According to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Loyalty Day originally began as “Americanization Day” in 1921 as a counter to the Communists’ May 1 celebration of the Russian Revolution on 1 May 1930. On May 1, 1930, 10,000 VFW members staged a rally at New York’s Union Square to promote patriotism. Through a resolution adopted in 1949, May 1st evolved into Loyalty Day. Observances began in 1950 on April 28 and climaxed May 1 when more than five million people across the nation held rallies. In New York City, more than 100,000 people rallied for America. In 1958 Congress enacted Public Law 529 proclaiming Loyalty Day a permanent fixture on the nation’s calendar.

On 28 April 2025 in Fayetteville GA’s Autry’s Armory saw VFW Post members fire away at target on the newly ungraded pistol range.

It was a real hoot and treat to show off each other their “toys” while safely poking holes 10, 15 & 25 yards away in paper targets. Autrey’s employee and a Post Life Member, Bryan Galante, checked us in, took our money and kept close supervision over us old VFW combat warriors. Amazingly Bryan did it all with a smile!

Sharing stories while blasting away followed by lunch at a local Veteran owned restaurant made for another fun and entertaining Post event. We hope everyone (including Auxiliary members) will come and share in the fun the next time as our Post invades the range.

Each month Comrades of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 reach out to fellow Veterans for personal one-on-one visits. Called “V3” (standing for “VFW Veterans Visit”), in person we talk to 80 veterans (mostly in care facilities), shaking hands and asking the all important VFW core fundamental trait: “How can we help?” That important question drives the motivation of our Post members continually.

However, these visits cannot be done without the help of a whole team of support. A team includes the dedicated staff members at the five facilities we visit: Somerby Senior Living, Legacy Ridge, The Reserve, Arbour Terrace and Southland Rehabilitation Center.

In addition, our Post’s new VFW Auxiliary visits approximately 30 spouses and widows of Veterans at two facilities as part of the V3 team.

21 November 2024, saw once again VFW Post 9949 members and guests fan out to five local senior living facilities and residences. There, they conducted a personal one-on-one visit to Veterans. This is the Post’s monthly VFW Veteran Visits (V3) event that is open to all volunteers. The VFW Auxiliary conducts the same activity to spouses & widows of Veterans. They receive handcrafted cards and flowers. While Veterans get a bag filled with candy and bananas, it’s the personal visit that matters to them. The next visit will be on 19 December. Visit to these Veterans starts at Somerby Senior Living Center, 200 Rockaway Rd, Peachtree City and the visit to spouses/widows starts at Legacy Ridge of PTC, 1967 W. Lanier Ave, Hwy 54, Peachtree City. Both locations start meeting at 1pm.

On November 11th, Peachtree City hosted a Veterans Day celebration, and our own VFW Post 9949 and American Legion Post 50 had the honor to participate. It began with the posting of our United States flag and the colors followed by the singing of the national anthem. Then, Post 9949 chaplain Jay Flournoy delivered the invocation to a large crowd of Veterans and citizens, including the city Mayor Kim Learnard, councilmen and other city and state officials.

The keynote speaker, Will Garner spent 26 years on active duty as a US Army officer. His dedicated service all over the world is an example of the sacrifice Veterans make every day in all branches of military service. His remarks were followed by a wreath laying ceremony and a gun salute by Post 9949 member Bo Hill. Thanks to everyone for making it such a special day!

On 9 November, VFW Post 9949 members marched out to six locations in Peachtree City. Post members and volunteers handed out poppies and took donations in remembrance of Veterans Day. Poppy donations are an essential part of the Post’s Emergency Relief Fund that are only used in direct support of needy Veterans and their families. Building handicap access ramps for Veteran’s homes, lodging for homeless Veterans, monthly supplies for visits to 100+ Veterans and their spouses- at five local nursing facilities/residences are a few examples that Buddy Poppy donations have been used by VFW Post 9949.

Special thanks to Julian Velasquez for organizing the drive, and to all members of the Post and Auxiliary that volunteered!
