πŸ”” Easter is approaching! In Poland, as in many other Catholic countries, today we are celebrating Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week. In the Christian tradition, the palm is a symbol of victory, joy, and hope.

🌿 It is an important symbol heralding the arrival of Easter, commemorating Christ's entry into Jerusalem. This holiday has been celebrated in Poland since the Middle Ages. Every year, festive celebrations and processions with beautiful, large palms take place in Polish churches.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Competitions for the most beautiful and tallest palms, ranging from a few dozen centimeters to even several meters in height, are an inseparable part of this day. Making palms is not only a beautiful tradition but also a wonderful way to spend time with loved ones.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡± 84 Years Ago Today, One Symbol Changed Everything

On March 20, 1942, a young resistance fighter quietly painted a strange anchor-like symbol on the wall of a Warsaw cafΓ© β€” and Poland was never the same.

It was called the Kotwica (β€œAnchor”) β€” a P fused with a W β€” and it was drawn in just three brushstrokes.

But those three strokes said what no words could under N**i occupation: Poland is still here. Poland is still fighting.

The symbol was designed by Anna SmoleΕ„ska, a 21-year-old art student and scout who had her future stolen by Hitler’s invasion. She never saw the full power of what she created. She was arrested, sent to Auschwitz, and died of typhus at just 23 years old. πŸ’”

Within weeks of that first painting, the anchor was everywhere β€” on walls, banknotes, trams, and newspapers. Resistance fighters risked their lives to put it in the most impossible places, even feet away from Gestapo officers.
When the 1944 Warsaw Uprising broke out, it moved from secret walls to open armbands. From whisper to war cry.

Banned by the communists after the war (which only made it MORE popular), it appeared again on protest banners for decades β€” and still does today.

Some symbols belong to history. This one belongs to the soul of a nation.
