SLATER INDUSTRIAL ARCHIVES preserves and provides access to the special collections of the Old Slater Mill Association (OSMA). Founded in 1921, the OSMA was formed to preserve and restore the 1793 Old Slater Mill in Pawtucket RI, the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. OSMA took ownership of the mill in 1923, and completed its restoration in 1925. In 1952, OSMA hired its first profes

sional curator. In 1955, OSMA opened the Old Slater Mill Museum to the public, soon to become a staple of enrichment education for Rhode Island public schools, and home of the iconic "Slater Mill Field Trip," a rite of passage for students in RI. OSMA acquired the 1810 Wilkinson Mill and 1758 Sylvanus Brown House, and additional property, in the 1960s, and in the 1970, the 5-acre Old Slater Mill National Historic Landmark District was dedicated. In 2014, Congress established the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park (BRVNHP), and in 2021, the Old Slater Mill National Historic Landmark was formally accepted into the Park system. Today, the OSMA operates the Slater Industrial Archive, and support the interpretation of the Old Slater Mill National Historic Landmark, and the BRVNHP, for the benefit of all.
