Books Are Wings is an RI based non-profit organization putting free books in the hands of children.

We believe the power of literacy transforms the lives of children, their families and communities for the better. Books Are Wings seeks to provide every child with regular access to books. BAW works to engage students in their classrooms, at school functions, community events, and playgrounds. We believe that offering books to children in different environments instills a consistent message that reading is not just school work- it’s a way of life!

At every one of our programs, events and in our Books Spots, you'll always see books with a diverse range of topics, characters and styles. Why? Because book choice empowers young readers, and makes them feel seen and heard.

When kids have access to books that match their interests, have characters that they can relate to, and lots of types of reading materials, they get excited about reading. Throwback Thursday to a classroom full of proud readers at Agnes Little Community School in Pawtucket, where students completed the Read to 100 Challenge in Ms. Gariepy’s Kindergarten class. One young student proudly displaces their pick of a Spider Man book, a reminder of why book choice is so important. We are so grateful to be at the beginning of a new school year, continuing these programs with partner teachers and schools across the state. Volunteers are an integral part of our work at Books Are Wings. We rely on donations for the bulk of the books we get into the community, and these books need sorting.

When we do purchase books, for programs like Tale Mail Early Family Literacy, volunteers help us package up the materials and new books to go to sites around the state.

This week, Brightstar Lottery sent a team of seven employee volunteers to help us assemble Tale Mail kits, making 500 packages that will go out to local families. We are so grateful to the team for their hard work and to Brightstar for their ongoing support!

Together with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, we're feeding kids' minds and bodies! As part of Serve Night at The Boys & Girls Club of East Providence, the Food Bank's community nutrition team served a healthy meal to kids in the club as part of their Kids Cafe program, and distributed books from Books Are Wings to build their home libraries.

We're so proud for opportunities to partner with organizations like the Food Bank, just one more way we can reach families right in their communities and increase book access across Rhode Island.
