VFW will be set up at the Pawnee County Fair this coming Thursday! We are doing a raffle fundraiser this year with two custom stone daggers. These are handmade by one of our local veterans with locally sourced materials! These would make a great desk or coffee table conversation piece! Come see us!

Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning at the Buffalo theater for our Memorial Day event.

After 10 years as Post Commander, Gary Vance Sr handed over the command of Post 7966 to Marvin Collier.

Mona Denney presented new bricks for the Walk of Honor along with certificates for the recipients and their families.

Marvin Collier was gifted a beautiful quilt from the ladies of the Grateful Hands Quilts of Valor; Connie Fuss, Peggie Gordon, Branda Vance, and Donna Vigil.

Roll Call was called for the names of the 44 Veterans of Pawnee County who passed away in the last year.

Thank you to Kirby Stevens and Ross Johnson for the for eloquent prayers, and to Quinn Brown for the playing of Taps.

To the families and members of the community who came together this morning to honor the fallen with us, thank you again.

Cpl. Michael Bailey was in the Navy for about 7 years. His career was moving along nicely, he was set to be an E-7 I believe. It wasn’t enough though. He felt he hadn’t given enough or been in the fight yet? I’m not sure exactly. But he left the Navy and enlisted in the Marines after all that time. Back to square one, back to boot camp. Just another grunt. Most of the guys in charge of him were many years younger, myself included. He was attached to our unit relatively last minute before we went into what would be the first big fight for many of us. He was killed in action, it was June 16th, 2010. His death was the first that our unit suffered that deployment, and unfortunately not our last. His was the blood that made us Vengeance.

I wish I had known you better then brother, I wish many things. I feel like I know you now though. You’re an inspiration to me. You’ve been a part of my daily life for a decade now. When I feel sorry for myself, I think of you and suck it up. When I need courage, I think of you. When I’m tired and hurting, I dig deep and think of you and my strength is renewed. I know you would have been willing to sacrifice more, to do the hard thing. And I feel indebted to you, for your life that was taken, I will always owe you my best. Thank you for your sacrifice brother.

PFC Robert H. Jenkins, Jr., Medal of Honor Recipient
Died: March 5, 1969

CITATION: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Marine Gunner with Company C, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, Third Marine Division in connection with operations against enemy forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Early on the morning of 5 March 1969, Private First Class Jenkins' twelve-man reconnaissance team was occupying a defensive position at Fire Support Base Argonne south of the Demilitarized Zone. Suddenly, the Marines were assaulted by a North Vietnamese Army Platoon employing mortars, automatic weapons, and hand gr***des. Reacting instantly, Private First Class Jenkins and another Marine quickly moved into a two-man fighting emplacement, and as they boldly delivered accurate machine gun fire against the enemy, a North Vietnamese soldier threw a hand gr***de into the friendly emplacement. Fully realizing the inevitable results of his action, Private First Class Jenkins quickly seized his comrade, and pushing the man to the ground, he leaped on top of the Marine to shield him from the explosion. Private First Class Jenkins was seriously injured and subsequently succumbed to his wounds. His courage, inspiring valor, and selfless devotion to duty saved a fellow Marine from serious injury or possible death and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
