Low Country Herb Society

Low Country Herb Society Low Country Herb Society was established in 1986 to help stimulate the interest in the planting, harvesting and uses of herbs.

Membership is open to everyone- from those interested in learning about getting started with herbs in their garden to those interested in sharing their knowledge and experience with growing or cooking with herbs. We hold monthly meetings in Litchfield, SC on various topics relating to the world of herbs: culinary, propagation, garden planning, decorative, and more, the second Tuesday of most months beginning in September and ending with a picnic in May.

Gardeners and hikers beware:

The Asian needle ant is a small-to-medium-sized ant, with workers and queens measuring up to one-fifth of an inch in length. They are shiny, dark brown to black, with the end of the antennae and the legs being a lighter orangey brown. Their sting can cause intense pain over several hours, and some people have experienced an allergic reaction causing death. They like damp places, but they have been found in parks, lawns, around logs, etc. There numbers have greatly increased in several states including South Carolina.

The weather was perfect for our work today. Thank you to the outstanding crew who joined us; we truly got the job done. From start to finish—concluding with Andrea setting the final lavender plant—it was a great success. I have attached some pictures of our progress for you to see.

Since we will not be meeting in May for our final gathering, I encourage you all to stop by the library to pick some herbs, enjoy the bench, and take a moment to relax. Our goal remains to create an atmosphere for the entire community to enjoy.

Depending on the weather, we may need volunteers to help with watering this spring to ensure the new plants take root. I will provide updates and post a sign-up sheet if necessary.

Thank you again, and have a lovely evening.

Best regards,

Theresa Apostolopoulos

Pam Bronn gave a fabulous presentation yesterday at the Low Country Herb Society general meeting about the farm she and her husband, Bruno Moracci tend in Loris, SC. They grow fruit, vegetables, herbs, and raise cattle and chickens! We learned about Callaloo among many other things!
