At the snap, the encroachment of the opposition is inevitable. Although the QB plays offense, he posture is defensive as he anticipates the attack. The only thing that matters at the snap is how well prepared the QB is for the attack. The opposing team came seeking to conquer and might succeed, if they catch the QB off guard.

Our adversary, the devil, is also seeking to conquer our minds, “prowling around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour”, and this is why we must “be watchful” (1 Peter 5:8). Similar to the QB waiting on the defensive attack, when the enemy releases his darts, we must be waiting in our armor.

We are provided the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit, and the “readiness given by the gospel of peace” as shoes for our feet (Eph. 6:13-17).

Let us take courage that just as a coach would not send his QB into the game unprotected, the Lord does not expect us to face the enemy unarmed. He provides us with an armor through the truth of His word and the presence of His spirit to “stand against the schemes of the devil” (Eph. 6:11).
