Today we honor CT2 Jerry Leroy Converse, USN, one of the 34 American servicemen killed aboard the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967.

The USS Liberty was attacked in international waters by Israeli air and naval forces, leaving 34 Americans dead and at least 171 wounded. Israel said the attack was a case of mistaken identity, while many surviving crew members have spent decades challenging that explanation and calling for a full, transparent accounting of what happened.

That is why this mission still matters. Preserving the records, photographs, testimony, and firsthand accounts takes real resources, and once that history disappears, it cannot be recovered.

The USS Liberty was attacked in international waters by Israeli air and naval forces, leaving 34 Americans dead and at least 171 wounded. Israel maintained that the attack was a case of mistaken identity, while many surviving crew members spent decades disputing that account and saying they were pressured to remain silent about what they witnessed.

Today we honor **Allen Merle Blue**, one of the 34 American servicemen killed aboard the **USS Liberty on June 8, 1967**.

And with every name we share, we want to do more than remember. We want to help people understand what actually happened that day.

The USS Liberty was a United States Navy intelligence-gathering ship operating in international waters when it came under sustained attack by Israeli air and naval forces. By the time the attack was over, **34 Americans were dead and at least 171 were wounded**.

Those numbers matter. But names matter more.

Allen Merle Blue was not simply part of a casualty count. He was a real person with a life, a family, a future, and shipmates who would carry the memory of that day for the rest of their lives.

That is why preserving photographs, testimony, documents, and firsthand accounts matters so much. History can be forgotten when the people who lived it are gone. Our responsibility is to make sure that does not happen here.

Today we honor **William Bernard Allenbaugh, USN** — one of the 34 American sailors killed aboard the **USS Liberty** on **June 8, 1967**.

But this series is about more than remembrance. It is also about telling the truth.

On that day, the USS Liberty was attacked in **international waters**. **Thirty-four American servicemen were killed. At least 171 were wounded.** The ship was badly damaged, and the men who survived carried the physical and emotional scars for the rest of their lives. For decades, many survivors said they were pressured to remain silent, while the full weight of what happened that day was too often pushed aside, minimized, or ignored.

That is why we are doing this.

We are honoring each of the 34 by name, face, and sacrifice — because they were not statistics. They were American sailors. They were sons, brothers, husbands, fathers, and shipmates. Their lives mattered, and their story deserves to be told honestly.

Today we honor Philip McCutcheon Armstrong, USN, one of the 34 American sailors who lost their lives aboard the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967.

For decades, many of the men who survived that day have said they were discouraged or ordered not to speak publicly about what they experienced. That silence carried a cost. It left families searching for answers, survivors carrying memories largely on their own, and an important chapter of American history unknown to generations of Americans.

That is one reason the USS Liberty Veterans Association continues this work.

We preserve the photographs. We tell the stories. We honor the men who were lost. We give the survivors a platform to speak in their own words. And we work to make sure the 34 are remembered as individual men, not simply a number in a history book.

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC, UNITED STATES, July 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- USS Liberty Veterans Association Launches Advocacy and Transparency Initiative Following Introduction of H.Res. 1406. Congressional resolution honors USS Liberty crew, calls for full declassification of attack records, and renews focus on accountability for the June 8, 1967 attack.

The USS Liberty Veterans Association (LVA) today announced a renewed national advocacy campaign to support government transparency and historical accountability related to the June 8, 1967 attack on the USS Liberty, following the June 30 introduction of H.Res. 1406 by Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY).

The congressional resolution honors the 34 Americans killed and 174 wounded during the attack, urges the President to fully declassify all remaining government records, and recognizes longstanding concerns raised by survivors and former senior U.S. officials regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

USS Liberty Survivor Phil Tourney on The Kim Iversen Show | July 28, 2026

June 8th, 1967. A clear, calm Mediterranean afternoon. The USS Liberty — a US Navy intelligence ship flying the American flag in international waters — came under attack for two hours by unmarked jets and torpedo boats. Thirty-four Americans killed, 171 wounded. Israel has always called it mistaken identity, and official inquiries agreed. The men on the ship never have.

Survivor Phil Tourney joins Kim with his firsthand account: Israeli planes waving at the crew that very morning, then blacked-out jets returning at 2PM to take out every antenna first; the American flags shot down and replaced, twice; na**lm on the deck; a torpedo that killed 25 men in a single compartment; life rafts shot out of the water; and helicopters with commandos on the skids that simply turned and left. He describes rescue aircraft launched from US carriers being recalled — twice — on orders from Washington, and what he says Admiral Isaac Kidd told the crew days later: speak a word of this, and you end up in Leavenworth "or worse."

He stayed silent for 18 years. He's spent the 43 since refusing to be — through a seven-day board of inquiry he calls a sham, bomb threats against a memorial library, and a lifetime of being smeared for telling the story. Kim adds her own accounting: the run of documented American deaths at Israeli hands since 1967 measured against the death toll now being used to justify war with Iran — and asks why one "greatest ally" gets six decades of cover. With Thomas Massie now calling for a real investigation from the House floor, the last ~50 surviving crewmen are running out of time to get one.

HONORING THE 34: WILLIAM BERNARD ALLENBAUGH, USN

Today, we begin a new series dedicated to the 34 American sailors who were killed aboard the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967.

We begin with William Bernard Allenbaugh.

He was not simply one of “the 34.” He was a son, a shipmate, an American sailor, and a man whose life mattered. His name deserves to be spoken, his service deserves to be honored, and his sacrifice must never be reduced to a footnote in history.

Over the coming weeks, we will remember each of the 34 men individually. We will honor who they were, preserve their names, and make certain that time, politics, and silence do not erase what happened to them.
