🏆Municipal Trailblazer of the Year: The City of South Haven/South Haven Area Water & Sewer Authority

The Municipal Trailblazer of the Year award honors municipalities that demonstrate visionary leadership in community and economic development.
The City of South Haven and South Haven Area Water & Sewer Authority (SHAWSA), exemplifies that vision through a bold initiative to modernize critical water and sewer infrastructure. By partnering with state and federal agencies, including EGLE and the USDA, they secured $42 million in funding to implement wide-reaching improvements—such as a new water storage tank, plant upgrades, new distribution lines, and the replacement of over 2,100 lead service lines.
These efforts not only resolve longstanding infrastructure issues but also lay a strong foundation for future economic growth and public health. Their commitment to collaboration, innovation, and resilience makes them a model for effective municipal leadership!

This week, our Economic Development Manager, Katie Multhauf, met with CHT USA alongside Wayne Coleman, FTZ 43 Administrator from Battle Creek Unlimited, to explore how the Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) Program can benefit their business.
With the current uncertainty in global tariffs, operating under a FTZ can offer key advantages like duty deferment and reduction—especially for companies who are actively importing and exporting. We took a deep dive into CHT USA’s specific tariff situation and toured their facility to better understand their operations.

This is what economic development is all about: connecting businesses and communities with the right partners, programs, and resources to grow and thrive. 💼🌎

On June 26, Market One hosted its Fifth Annual Awards Event at the scenic Black River Barn in South Haven, Michigan. The event brought together local business owners, civic leaders, and community partners from Cass and Van Buren counties to celebrate the achievements of standout businesses and forward-thinking municipalities making a difference in Southwest Michigan.
The evening featured a compelling keynote address by Tim Terrentine, Founder & Chief Translator of Translator’s Consulting Group, and a dynamic performance by magician Pieter Hofstra, adding inspiration and entertainment to the celebration.

Last week, our Community Development Director, Katie Vanderhulst, and External Affairs Manager, Julia Wall, attended the Van Buren County Township Supervisors meeting. They shared exciting updates on upcoming events, highlighted the success of our 5th Annual Municipal Summit, and outlined our strategic plans to support local municipalities with a more proactive grant-writing initiative.

The response? Immediate engagement—several follow-up meetings are already on the books! We’re proud to continue strengthening relationships and delivering relevant, impactful support to our local communities.
