We’ve had a busy couple of days over here, with two pigeons with wing injuries landing, 7 tiny baby deer mice likely secondary poisoning passed from moms milk, a tiny woodchuck who was handled by a dog and likely orphaned, plus a juvenile chipmunk in very critical condition who just landed on my lunch break.
I’m very sleepy from a night of baby mouse feeds, but I thought I should share an introduction of a couple of the newbies!
As well as a reminder to not use rodenticide poison. It travels up the food chain and is a leading cause of decline in birds of prey. Less birds of prey = more rodents… poison will just make your rodent problem worse over time, in addition to the ecological damage inflicted.

Release day for the last of the over wintered baby squirrels! Good luck out there babies ❤️

We do a slow release over here for squirrels, so they’ll have access to their established nest in the release cage and will likely return at night for a bit for dinner and to sleep until they pick one of the nesting boxes in the trees or build a drey to make their new home.

Hopefully they decide to stay close by. I dont like goodbyes, I like see you laters 🫶

Huge shoutout to for their generous seed donation to our Wild Side Garden Project! Picture shows just some of the varieties sent.
The veggies that grow from their support will go on to feed our wildlife visitors, and the florals will go in our pollinator garden, supporting a robust ecosystem over here. I am most excited to get to feed the critters the world’s *prettiest* corn.
Harris Seeds is a Rochester based supplier and they do a lot to support our local community. Please consider showing them your support as well this gardening season!
Cant wait to share updates as the growing season progresses. Stay tuned to see how our garden flourishes this year!

Happy freedom day little bunnies!

I’ve been working on making a “mini meadow” for the buns to be released in. Lots of wild strawberry, black raspberry, native wildflowers to munch on support pollinators, and some good natural brush covering for well protected nests.
When bunnies (and chucks and other critters) have ample access to natural foods, they’re far less likely to go after your veggie garden. Leave room for natural grazing and everybody wins!

Maryanne, Jack and Liz have moved outside along with the remaining over wintered reds! With 17!! Squirrels marrooned here over winter, their releases have had to be staggared a bit, but we’re getting there. By the time these babies are done with the release cages, the first round if spring babies will be just about ready to move in 😳 crazy!

Once the release cages are no longer being used we can move out the last few babinos. We’ve got the previously naked reds (+one who wasnt naked), solo red who lost part of his tail, and Jack, Liz, and Mary Ann waiting to move out.
There is no better feeling on earth than sitting outside on release week and seeing happy, healthy, running around and showing off their freedom skills 🙌

First pic is my newest intake, Norbit (who orbits!)… a very handsome baby with head trauma who has a case of the spinnies 😰
He came in running in circles and with poor balance, which is a common neurological effect that can happen when babies fall from their tree and hit their head. He’s very skinny, so likely orphaned and ventured out of the nest to find help, and then fell from his tree. Thankfully he did find help though! From a wonderful person, who brought him to me. Recovery from head trauma like this can be slow, and it takes time to see what recovery will look like for him.
Second pic is Mr. Rudy Three Toes. His hand is looking amazing and he is SUCH a good eater! Chonking right up. I am so pleased because I did not expect him to make such a wonderful, fast recovery. 10/10 baby squirrel - no notes.
That puts the squirrel ticker counter at 11!
