This past weekend we hosted our first ever 5k advocacy event! We had a fantastic turn out and were able to have great conversations with people who are not familiar with the incarceration system. We would like to thank our sponors and donors for this event, every participant, bystander and volunteer for coming out! Each individual who participated received information on incarceration in North Carolina. Early registrants also received the book "Unfair : The New Science of Criminal Injustice" by Adam Benforado. Be sure to follow us and join us for our next event!

Governor Josh Stein has proclaimed April "Second Chance Month" - a chance to recognize the thousands of people returning to our communities each year after completing their sentences, and the importance of supporting their success. means access to jobs, housing, healthcare, transportation, and support systems. Through efforts like the NC Joint Reentry Council and , our state has taken a unique, whole-of-government approach to finding solutions, breaking down barriers and reducing recidivism. We are proud to work with the Governor, Anna Stein, First Lady of North Carolina, community partners, advocates, businesses, and many others, to keep this vital work going all year through.

Our March Joint Reentry Council meeting highlighted a critical component to reentry – restoring driver licenses. Campbell Law, Duke Law, and Legal Aid NC are working with people who are incarcerated to restore their licenses before they leave prison so that once released, they can go to work and take care of their families.

We also heard from Ken Oliver, President and CEO of JUMP, which tackles the stigma around people in the justice system and works with companies, policymakers, and communities to open education and employment pathways. Charlotte was chosen the first city for JUMP’s collaboration on economic mobility for incarcerated people.
