In 2019 the, then, Patrick Air Force Base (now, Patrick Space Force Base) decided to discontinue its sponsorship of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) as an on base service. The VITA had previously provided free tax assistance that focused on serving active duty and retired military personnel and their families. The discontinued VITA service had operated its on base program in the Shark Center on South Housing for well over a decade as a partnership involving the PAFB Legl Office, the Brevard United Fund, the IRS and the Project Emeritus Volunteer Office. With the closing of the Patrick VITA, the United Fund decided to continue a service under its direction in an off base location utilizing a new group of volunteers, a number of whom were Project Emeritus volunteers. Like the old service, this “new” VITA focuses on tax assistance to the military community. We have included below a description of the service with a phone number to call to arrange an appointment or seek answers to questions you may have regarding your federal tax return. Remember, the IRS has extended its filing date to May 17, 2021 this year so there is more time to get assistance in doing your filing.

NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

When a soldier dies, Army regulations require that a casualty assistance officer (CAO) be assigned to provide assistance to the next of kin should the family request one. Unfortunately, there are not enough CAOs to support the almost one million retired Army members community. Because of this shortage, a recommendation had previously been submitted by the Fort Stewart Retiree Advisory Council suggesting that retired military volunteers be trained to fill the role of “limited duty” CAOs. The Army has decided to evaluate this proposal through the use of a six (6) month trial period pilot to assess the feasibility of using retired volunteers to augment the existing available number of CAOs.

If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a CAO in this pilot you should submit an email with your name and contact information to: [email protected] and put CAO Pilot in the subject line. NOTE: There is a 31March2020 deadline for the submission of these emails.

Those selected for this pilot will receive training to perform the function of a CAO. This is a non paid position and for more details Goggle, Army Echoes Feb-May 2020 newsletter and see pages 12-13.
