While we are a haven for every animal, the Palisades is home to some creatures that are best left alone! You may see a venomous Eastern Copperhead sunning itself along our rocks. In the winter, it has been observed snuggling up with Timber Rattlesnakes and Black Rat Snakes in the same dens.

Snakes often slither away or rattle when they face a threat, but Copperheads stay still. They have such good camouflage, people and dogs do not see them!

Don't want to see one in the park? Best practice is to stay to the trails, keep dogs on a leash, and stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid sticking your hand in rock crevasses, and do not disturb wildlife.

Keep an ear out for W1AW/2 from now until June 10 2359 UTC as New Jersey gets on the air for the ARRL America 250 Worked All States program. A few NJ POTA operators will be on the air from various parks, so keep an eye out on the spotting pages!
