Betty J. Brown Foundation for Cancer
Betty Jane Brown known to many as “Bet or Nanny”, daughter of Walter Curvy and Emily Van Dunk, was born on March 12, 1933 in Paterson, New Jersey. She departed this life on May 27, 2018.
Betty was raised in Paterson, New Jersey and attended Eastside HIgh School. In December 1950 she went on to marry her childhood friend Chauncey I. Brown, Jr. From this union three children were born; Cheryl, Chauncey III and Clifford Brown.
While raising three children, Betty went on to work at Bell Atlantic all while being an instrumental figure in her community. Which led her to becoming Director of Welfare for the City of Paterson until April 1, 1995 when she retired to care for her granddaughters Chanel Porchia-Albert and Courtney Porchia after the passing of her eldest child Cheryl Lynette Brown-Porchia.
Her passion for assisting others in her community would continue throughout the years in working with community members towards a better Paterson, never missing city council meetings, working at the voting polls, and assisting on various campaigns throughout the City of Paterson. Betty was also an advent traveler of the world always looking to explore a new city and experience a new adventure with her sisters and longtime friends.
