Long Island Head Start Long Island Head Start (LIHS) offers no cost childcare to qualifying families. Long Island Head Start, is a private not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

Long Island Head Start offers a variety of service models, depending on the needs of the family. Head Start and Early Head Start programs are based in centers. Some programs offer home-based services that assign dedicated staff who conduct weekly visits to children in their own home and work with the parent as the child’s primary teacher. Long Island Head Start serves thousands of children and the

ir families each year in over 20 licensed Head Start and Early Head Start centers throughout Suffolk County. What is Head Start? Head Start programs prepare the most vulnerable young children to succeed in school and in life beyond school. To achieve this, Head Start programs promote the school readiness of children ages birth to 5 from at-risk families by providing services in core areas of early learning, health, and family well-being while engaging parents as partners every step of the way. Head Start encompasses Head Start preschool programs, which serve children ages 3-5 years-old, and Early Head Start programs for infants, toddlers, and Expectant Mothers. Head Start serves over 1 million children and their families in over 2,800 programs, employing 225,000 staff and teachers. There are more than 20,000 classrooms throughout the country.

For 60 years, Long Island Head Start has been shaped by extraordinary people who believed in the power of opportunity, the potential of every child, and the strength of families and communities.

Our “60 Years. 60 People. One Legacy.” video honors 60 individuals who helped write our story—trailblazers, leaders, educators, advocates, parents, Board members, longtime staff, and friends of Long Island Head Start whose dedication helped build the foundation we stand on today.

Their stories are part of our history. And that history matters—because the lessons, sacrifices, determination, and vision of those who came before us help guide where we go next.

As we celebrate 60 years, we honor our past not simply by remembering it, but by carrying its purpose forward for the next generation.

These 60 people represent so many more who have been part of our journey.

For 60 years, Long Island Head Start has been building brighter futures across Suffolk County 💛

Today, we are proud to share a special anniversary video that honors our history, celebrates our families, and looks ahead to the future we continue to build together.

In this video, we also recognize our incredible Staff Trailblazers — team members who have devoted 30 years or more to guiding generations of children and strengthening families across Long Island. Their dedication, compassion, and belief in every child are the heart of our legacy.

Thank you to every staff member, parent, board member, community partner, and supporter who has been part of our journey. Here’s to 60 years of love, learning, and stronger families — and the many more ahead.
