The Suffolk County Lions Diabetes Education Foundation (SCLDEF) is holding their next fundraiser. We are using this time of the pandemic to raise funds so that when it is safe to be out and about again, we can go back to assisting introducing schools in bringing the Project Fit America program to them. Excellent program that teaches students to be healthy, but also teaches them about diabetes. Has a nice Social Emotional Learning component to it as well.

Our next fundraiser is a chocolate sale in anticipation of Valentine's Day. Please use the below link to go to the site where you can order directly from the catalog and the items you choose will be mailed directly to you from the company.

We thank you in advance for supporting this month long fundraiser (runs from 1/14/21 to 2/14/21) and our efforts to support our community.

Please click here: http://fundraisingnet.com/brochure
Our Seller ID is: 58422345

Want to support several students AND ship to the same address? Enter the first student ID and add items to the cart for that student. To add another student to the order, View the Shopping Cart and "Click to Shop for Another Student". (All students must be from the same school.)

You’re at risk for developing type 2 diabetes if you:

Have prediabetes
Are overweight
Are 45 years or older
Have a parent, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes
Are physically active less than 3 times a week
Have ever had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or given birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds
Are African American, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian, or Alaska Native (some Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans are also at higher risk)

If you have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease you may also be at risk for type 2 diabetes.

You can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes with simple, proven lifestyle changes such as losing weight if you’re overweight, eating healthier, and getting regular physical activity.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by an immune reaction (the body attacks itself by mistake). Risk factors for type 1 diabetes are not as clear as for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Known risk factors include:

Family history: Having a parent, brother, or sister with type 1 diabetes.
Age: You can get type 1 diabetes at any age, but it’s more likely to develop when you’re a child, teen, or young adult.

In the United States, whites are more likely to develop type 1 diabetes than African Americans and Hispanic/Latino Americans.

Currently, no one knows how to prevent type 1 diabetes.

As many of you know, those with diabetes are more vulnerable to Covid-19. That is one of the reasons why the Suffolk County Lions Diabetes Education Foundation has gone virtual with its Strides 5K run. Next week, October 18 - 24 is the time to help us raise funds while taking steps to stay healthy at the same time, so we may continue to provide diabetes education to the communities in Suffolk County, NY. Anyone can participate. We ask that you maintain social distancing if you do not run alone.

Please sign up at https://e-district.org/sites/scldef/page-6.php and help us in our fight against diabetes. We are a 501(c)(3) and will be sending certificates to all who send us a picture of their route/completion of the 5K miles.

Thank you for helping us make our 2nd annual walk/run a success.

Stay well.
