Wait, what ? Our Gracie will be 15 this Sept ♥️
But as a rescue rabbit, there is no way to verify her date of birth. We could only guest-imate her age. For all we know she could be even older than her age too. Go Gracie Girl Go !!! Congrats to Herbie

Herbie is the oldest rabbit in the world at 15 years old 🐰

Zelle: is primarily of German and Dutch origin, meaning "cell" or "small room" (derived from Latin cella)

That is far from the definition of our little but mighty Zelle. The only thing small about Zelle, is her actual weight of 4 pounds. Her warrior like strength she has used these past 7 days has been nothing more than a miracle to witness. Columbus House Rabbit Society has sought out and provided every medical option available to aid in her fight to live. Zelle has had an entire team of highly skilled veterinarians specializing in the field of rabbit medicine implementing the best plan of care for her. I have stood beside her every step of the way, supporting her, caring for her, rooting her on as she fought the venom spreading through her tiny body. I watched for those tiny moments of hope when her constant fever of 105-106 would break and her eyes would sparkle with light again. She never stopped eating, she never stopped pooping and she never stopped wanting to fight for the life she so deserved.

My heart is so broken and the physical pain can be felt through my soul.

Yesterday at 4:00 pm I held Zelle in my arms. Wrapped her in her favorite blanket, played our favorite sounds for Reiki and told her that no matter what she decided I would continue to be there for her. If she wanted to fight, I would carry her. If she needed to sleep, I would hold her. She gave me one last attempt to stand up and show me what I already knew. How strong she was and how hard she had fought. She then settled back in my arms and along with the doctor, we began to help her transition to her next journey where she will no longer have to fight.

We hope that Zelle’s experience will help provide much needed knowledge and references for future cases involving rabbits bitten by brown recluse spiders.

Rescue will always be under appreciated and most misunderstood by those who do not see and feel what we do every day. I could never explain in words or actions to anyone what we physically and emotionally caring every day of our lives. It is who we are and not what we do.

Zelle’s story is one that will stay with me for a lifetime. Her strength and will to live was remarkable and a testament to just how resilient these amazing little creatures are.

Do not take life for granted. Even the tiniest of a life is worth fighting for.

Thank you to everyone who followed and rooted for her recovery.

We also want to Thank everyone who donated towards her medical bills.

Please continue to donate to Columbus House Rabbit Society in the name of “Zelle” so that they can continue saving and fighting for the future of rabbits.

I know Zelle appreciates everything everyone has done for her.

Thank you

Lisa & Zelle

IMPORTANT : Pray for Zelle. Please be aware of this silent but deadly killer that could enter your home without warning. The Brown Recluse Spider is not native to Ohio, infact it is actually uncommon, almost rare to find them in Ohio. BUT that doesn't stop them from traveling state to state via boxes, packages, or our hay and placing everyone in your home at risk, especially those most vulnerable.
As like most rescues, we order hay by the bulk, infact we can go through more than 50pds a month with just our small fluffle of 13. We stock them all, Oxbow, Farmer Dave, Pet Select and TSC. And with each bag, box or bale we pull apart, shake and mix our hay outside to loosen and look for the obvious such as rocks, dirt and anything that just doesnt look right. We then store all our hay in heavy duty Tuff Made containers with tight seal water proof lids in our home. We also then keep 2 large trash size containers with hay on both levels of our home for quick fluffs and refills. This hay has been shaken and sorted a 2nd time. We take every precaution we can to keep our rabbits safe, healthy and protected. BUT how do you protect them from something like this.
A tiny, almost invisible intruder who entered our home most likely through our hay supply undetected and now is the reason Zelle is fighting for her life.
While we cant always see every intruder or prevent every threat that seeks out to hurt our babies, WE CAN BE OBSERVANT!! I noticed something wasn't right with Zelle the moment I woke on Saturday am. Her personality that morning in the way she greeted or shall I say didn't greet me, was an instant clue. Just 7 hours prior she had been fine and by Saturday afternoon, she had been rushed to one vet to then only be rushed again to Medvet with a temperature of 106. We are now over 48 hours since when we believe the initial bite took place, and her temperature has yet to drop below 104. Zelle is fighting for her life right now. While she is receiving the best medical care possible from experts in Rabbit medicine, there is NO quick cure, no antibiotic to fight it, no antidote to counteract the poison. All Zelle can do is fight.
