From Kansas to the Borderlands! 🌾➡️🌵
Our education team has the pleasure of hosting Professor Luhring’s Desert Ecology summer class from Wichita State University! Guided by our educators Karla and Xochitl, the students hiked through Smith Canyon at the Borderlands Wildlife Preserve. Together, we dived into desert ecology and career pathways in ecological restoration and environmental education!

Along the trail, we spotted wildlife tracks and sat, a beautiful Regal Horned Lizard, blooming poppies and giant mesquite bugs! Thank you for visiting the Borderlands, Wichita State. We had a blast exploring the trails with you and can’t wait to meet again!

De Kansas a la Tierras Fronterizas! 🌾➡️🌵
Nuestro equipo de educación tuvo el placer de recibir a la clase de verano de Ecología del Desierto del Profesor Luhring de Wichita State University! Guiados por nuestras educadoras, Karla y Xochitl, los estudiantes caminaron por Smith Canyon en la Reserva de Vida Silvestre de Borderlands. Juntos, nos sumergimos en la ecología del desierto y exploramos trayectorias profesionales en la restauración ecológica y la educación ambiental!

A lo largo del sendero, encontramos huellas y rastros de vida silvestre, un hermoso lagarto cornudo, amapolas floreciendo y chinches gigantes de mezquite. Please enjoy our highlight clips from this Spring at Borderlands Wildlife Preserve. We had cute Javelina (Dicotyles tajacu) and Gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) couples visit the drinker, along with a solitary Great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) . April also marked the return of the Gray hawks (Buteo plagiatus), who migrate a short distance from Mexico to spend the summer in the borderlands. Every year, we capture individuals visiting the wildlife drinkers throughout the spring and summer, showing how important supplemental water sources are for resident and seasonal wildlife.

Disfruten de estos videos destacados de la primavera en la Reserva de Vida Silvestre de Borderlands. Tuvimos adorables parejas de jabalíes/javelinas (Dicotyles tajacu) y de zorros grises (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) visitando el bebedero, junto con un solitario búho cornudo (Bubo virginianus). Abril también marcó el regreso del gavilán gris (Buteo plagiatus), especie que migra a corta distancia desde México para pasar el verano en la zona fronteriza. Cada año capturamos imágenes de ejemplares que visitan los bebederos de vida silvestre durante la primavera y el verano, lo que demuestra lo importantes que son estas fuentes de agua suplementarias para la fauna residente y estacional.

The Watershed Restoration Crew has continued erosion control assessments at the San Pedro River National Conservation Area, hiking from the catclaw-filled uplands to the cottonwood gallery. Thanks to the Foundation for America's Public Lands, we have been able to prescribe detailed treatment plans for areas along the river to help improve climate resilience.

El Equipo de Restauración de Cuencas ha continuado con las evaluaciones de control de la erosión en el Área Nacional de Conservación del Río San Pedro, recorriendo a pie el trayecto desde las tierras altas —repletas de arbustos espinosos — hasta la galería ribereña de álamos. We said goodbye to ‘Maple 2’ an incredible cohort who worked alongside us building erosion control structures, propagating thousands of native plants and pounds of seed pellets with and helped with removal of invasive plants, seeded, maintained trails, and fixed fencing at the TNC Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve . This was an inspiring group and we loved working with them over the last 10 weeks. You will all be very missed and we hope you keep us up to date with your exciting future endeavors. We would not have accomplished as much or had such a great time this spring without you 🌸🌱🦋❤️.

Nos despedimos de ‘Maple 2’, un increíble grupo de que trabajó junto a nosotros construyendo estructuras de control de la erosión, propagando miles de plantas nativas y kilos de semillas con , y ayudando con la eliminación de plantas invasoras, sembrando, manteniendo senderos y reparando cercas en la Reserva TNC Patagonia-Sonoita Creek . Coyotes (Canis latrans) like many other predators use scent marks to define their territory and communicate with other coyotes. These two stopped to p*e at the same spot, possibly signaling that this is their wash. Scent marking is important for maintaining pack social structures, and can even signal when breeding is taking place, or that resources are nearby.

Los coyotes (Canis latrans), como muchos otros depredadores, marcan su territorio y se comunican entre sí mediante olores. The Watershed Restoration Crew has been busy building erosion control structures at Circle Z Ranch, with funding from the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona and in partnership with . We've installed over 400 structures throughout the uplands of Sonoita Creek! They help to conserve water by collecting sediment and improving infiltration.

El Equipo de Restauración de Cuencas ha estado trabajando arduamente en la construcción de estructuras de control de la erosión en el Circle Z Ranch, con financiamiento de la Autoridad de Financiamiento de Infraestructura Hídrica de Arizona y en colaboración con . ¡Hemos instalado más de 400 estructuras a lo largo de las zonas altas de Sonoita Creek! While surveying for erosion control needs at the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, the Watershed Restoration Crew has found FIVE night blooming cereus (Peniocereus greggii), all in bloom! These cactus only bloom once a year, and typically only at night. But on overcast days, sometimes the blooms will linger into the morning. Thanks to Murphy and Jade for the awesome photos, and to the Foundation for America's Public Lands for making this work possible. Nothing is cuter than a badger bouncing down a trail - when you're watching from a safe distance of course. The American badger (Taxidea taxus) is a ferocious, tenacious carnivore known for being easily irritated, and quick to let everyone know about it. Their distinct shuffling gait comes from their plantigrade hind feet, meaning that they walk flat footed and not just on their toes, which is referred to as digitigrade (like your dogs and cats). While plantigrade hind feet slow badgers down, they hardly need to flee and often face threats head on and claws out. 🦡

Nada es más adorable que ver a un tejón caminar con ese andar rebotante, cuando lo observas desde una distancia segura, claro. El tejón Americano, también conocido como tlalcoyote, es un carnívoro feroz y tenaz conocido por ser fácilmente irritable y por dejarlo saber rápidamente. Su caminar distinta, se debe a que son animales plantígrados, lo que significa que caminan apoyando toda la planta del pie y no solo los dedos, a diferencia de los animales digitígrados como los perros y gatos. Aunque su anatomía puede hacer que parezcan más lentos, rara vez necesitan huir para escapar de depredadores ya que son buenos para pelear y para defenderse con sus garras.

Little Casa Blanca Canyon has been full of flowers this past month, especially New Mexico thistle (Cirsium neomexicanum). We've also spotted Parry's penstemon (Penstemon parryi), Antelope horn milkweed (Asclepias asperula), and Brownfoot (Acourtia wrightii). Thanks to funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Watershed Restoration Crew has been installing erosion control structures in this canyon for a year and a half, and we've never seen it so beautiful!

El Cañón de Little Casa Blanca ha estado lleno de flores este mes pasado, especialmente de Cardo del Desierto (Cirsium neomexicanum). También se han observado Campanita del Desierto (Penstemon parryi), Algodoncillo de Antílope (Asclepias asperula) y Perezia Rosa (Acourtia wrightii). Gracias a la fundación de National Fish and Wildlife, el Equipo de Restauración de Cuencas ha estado instalando estructuras de control de erosión en el cañón por un año y medio y jamás lo hemos visto así de bello!
