Spotted 👀🔍🐢
A stunning Ornate Box Turtle (Terrapene ornata) in our Borderlands Wildlife Preserve! These small terrestrial creatures thrive in open grasslands. However, living in this region means adapting to intense seasonal swings, from scorching summers to freezing winters, so they spend a significant portion of their lives completely underground. Box turtles are omnivores and feed off insects, fruits, berries and leaves.

Monsoon season in the borderlands has been plentiful and with its rumbling it’s welcomed a burst of foraging and social activity among our high desert creatures. What a treat! 😍⛈️🌈

Our education team had a lovely time learning from University of Arizona grad students and research fellows last week! We visited Borderlands Nursery & Seed to learn about our native plants and seed lab program before visiting the border wall and Santa Cruz River for reflections and a nature journaling workshop in preparation for our Borderlands Earth Care Youth program this upcoming fall. Thank you tons SFSW: Southwest Field Studies in Writing! 💚🌾🌱📝

¡Muchísimas gracias SFSW: Southwest Field Studies in Writing! 💚🌾🌱📝

This band of coyotes sure loves this stretch of wash, especially that one bundle of grass. Coyotes, and many other pack animals and predators, continually scent mark the same spot to establish their territory boundary, mark a resource, communicate with other pack members, and signal reproductive readiness.
If you look closely, one of the coyotes has a black patch of fur on their tail. Unique sarks like this can help identify individual species! Can you spot them throughout the rest of the video?

Check out this big ol Tom strutting through the new growth at Jaguar Pond. Gould's turkeys are the smallest subspecies of Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo mexicana) and are endemic to southern Arizona and New Mexico, and northern Mexico. But he's not the only one looking for water - can you see the two white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on the opposite bank in the upper left corner?

We're throwing it back to a highlight video from 2024 that was created during the heart of monsoon season. Annual plants crowded the desert floor, making wildlife (and some people) walk through a maze of vegetation to get to one of the wildlife drinkers at Borderlands Wildlife Preserve. While checking our trail cameras, sometimes we take our break near this drinker - and this time we caught a look at a wild Zach!

After recent rains, the watershed restoration crew had the pleasure of seeing our structures at work out in the Huachuca mountains. In these images, you can see water pooling upstream of our one rock dams. Trevor measures the length of the basin created by one of the dams. In the final slide, you can see some seed pellets we spread on one of our structures. They are breaking open and dissolving with the rain, and a tiny seedling is sprouting! Thanks to our partners the National Forest Foundation and Southern Arizona Quail Forever for making this work possible.
