Join us at nibezun for a community sewing circle guided by Penobscot Nation citizen Esther Sappier!

This will be a 10 hour circle spanning 2 days (6 hours on Saturday, 4 hours on Sunday). We will be working on our quilts, regalia, and all other projects old & new! Breakfast and lunch provided on Saturday; refreshments and snacks on Sunday.
We encourage folks to bring their own sewing machine, please. nibezun will have an extra sewing machine, thread, patterns, and other tools if needed.

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day from the nibezun team!

Today, and everyday, we celebrate Indigenous resilience and the deep-rooted connection to our Homelands that has kept us here since time immemorial.

We give great thanks to our ancestors for planting the seeds of healing so that today we can celebrate culture as medicine, live harmoniously with the land, the water, and each other, and nurture our relationship with Mother Earth.

At nibezun, we fill our baskets with the sacred knowledge that has been handed down by many grandmothers and grandfathers before us to carry Wabanaki life ways forward into a bright and abundant future. We are so grateful. Nitte-psiw.

Kekʷ ni AI? (Penobscot)
"What is AI?" (English)

"Kekʷ ni AI?" is an AI awareness seminar tailored to Indigenous Communities presented by Hannah Cyrus, Digital Media Librarian at Bangor Public Library.

WHEN: 6:00PM Friday October 9th

WHERE: Indian Island School - 10 Wabanaki Way Indian Island

This 1-hour seminar will cover a broad range of AI awareness topics, from what AI looks like, to how it operates, to spotting scams and false information. The presentation will address how Indigenous communities are largely affected, and how to mitigate potential harm and danger associated with artificial intelligence. Beverages, snacks, and light refreshments will be provided. This no-cost event is open to Penobscot Citizens and their families of all ages. "Kekʷ ni AI?" is a traveling presentation with the aim to bring this seminar into every Wabanaki Community in the state of Maine.

9AM-1PM: Open to Wabanaki Families and Members Only
The morning portion of the day is a time for Wabanaki to celebrate with their community in coming together for the Green Corn Teachings and Traditions. We will share the knowledge together and celebrate the time of harvest through demos, crafts and song.

1-4PM: Open to All
In the afternoon we invite the public to come and celebrate the Green Corn Potluck Social. The circle will be open to all to come connect, feast together, drum, dance and sing! Wabanaki vendors will be sharing their creativity with the public.

Please bring a dish to share and big smiles to join us for a day of celebration.

When will your basket be complete? (English)

WHEN: 12-5pm Sunday November 1st

WHERE: 18 Nepisikwit Dr Passadumkeag, ME

Join us at nibezun for a basketmaking circle guided by master basketmaker Paula Love from the Penobscot Nation! For this 5 hour circle, Paula will be walking us through weaving a candy basket, a traditional and beginner-friendly style of black ash Wabanaki basket. While we work on our baskets, we will discuss the history of Wabanaki basketry, different types of baskets and their purposes, the future of ash basketry, and Penobscot and Passamaquoddy language basketmaking terms and phrases. Lunch, snacks, and beverages will be provided.

10 spots are available for this workshop on a first come, first served basis. This no-cost event is open to Indigenous Peoples and their families only, please.
