Two Beautiful Films of Hope
The Whinnies! at Napa Nov 8 and 12

Out of the sadness and worry of these days -- for our Sonoma and Napa County families, friends, colleagues and neighbors, our wild herds, fellow man and tender planet -- arise these two missives of hope and stories of deep regard for our equine friends. For the October weeks when humans and animals were fighting for lives, livelihood and property, the Napa Valley Film Festival team debated the right thing to do. Because film brings us together as a community, they have decided the show will go on! Thus next week two fine films -- "Don't Shoot the Zebra Pony" and "Taming Wild" -- will screen together at two fabulous locations: at Farmstead in St. Helena on Wednesday, November 8 at 8 pm, and at the Uptown Theatre in Napa on Sunday, November 12 at 10 am. Following the films, The Whinnies! curator Kimberly Carlisle -- will explore more of what's possible in the horse/human partnership with the amazing women who made them. For the films' trailers, ticket information and theater locations visit thewhinnies.org. Hope to see you at the movies!

WILD HORSE AND B***O UPDATE
Since the House lifted in August the longstanding prohibition on the destruction of healthy wild horses and burros for its 2018 spending bill, the lives of tens of thousands of our wild ones nationally now hang in the balance of the Senate Interior Appropriations Committee. Their voted has been delayed from September but is expected THIS WEEK. Senate offices say that the most important thing we can do is to keep up our calls and emails.

Pictured here are the famed Onaqui Mustangs of Utah. The BLM is proposing to round up nearly 75% of this herd, more than 300 horses, instead of humanely managing their population on the range. If rounded up, they may be killed or sold for slaughter.

And equally astonishing, the American Wild Horse Campaign is reporting that after four successful years of a private/public partnership managing wild herds with birth control on the Virginia Range in Nevada, yesterday the Nevada Department of Agriculture suddenly discontinued the program. "Without this program, more horses will be born, more horses will be removed from the range, and more horses will go to slaughter," says Executive Director Suzanne Roy.

Please let your voice be heard! Nevada Governor Sandoval's office can be reached at (775) 684-5670. For more information about the actions you can take in support of our wild horses and burros, visit the americanwildhorsecampaign.org.

Last call! A few spots remain in Writing with Horses THIS Saturday October 21. Join us for a one-day retreat to connect with our magnificent horses, the expansive land, and your own exquisite creativity. Ultimately, you’ll give yourself the gift of connecting with your spirit through this horse immersion and creative writing experience. We’ll spend our time slowly taking in the vast hills, visiting with the horses and then journaling in circle. The day will be facilitated by writer and creative cheerleader and Kimberly Carlisle, our co-founder and director. No writing or horse experience necessary. To register visit our Calendar at flagranch.org
