65 years ago today, the original 13 Freedom Riders left Washington, D.C. for New Orleans on two Greyhound buses.

Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who made bus trips throughout the South, protesting segregation by using “whites-only” restrooms and lunch counters at bus stations. The group was often confronted by police officers, bystanders, and violent mobs — but they did not give up.

Later that same year, the Freedom Riders’ activism led the U.S. Interstate Commerce Commission to ban segregation in interstate bus travel. 🙌🏾 Their dedication to freedom reminds us that we can make systematic change when we stand up and make our voices heard. We are more powerful together. 🫱🏽‍🫲🏿
