Jackson County is seeking public input for planning efforts aimed at enhancing water resources in Moss Point and surrounding areas, more particularly East Pascagoula, Moss Point, Escatawpa and Helena areas, or along the Hwy 63 corridor north of I-10 including the Pascagoula River and tributaries.

Planning goals include identification of drainage needs, flooding issues and water quality concerns.

🎉We had two successful Cherokee Forest Habitat Restoration & Coastal Resiliency Workshop. Over 70 Pascagoula residents and local experts gathered to discuss restoration opportunities for the Cherokee Forest neighborhood. Overall, there was agreement that while careful planning and coordination is needed, the restoration ideas are technically feasible, strategically aligned, and promising.

Building on resident and expert insights and enthusiasm, our next steps will focus on refining restoration strategies, deepening community engagement, and working together to ensure the project delivers lasting benefits for both people and the environment.

This project co-led by Buy-In Community Planning and Cherokee Concerned Citizens demonstrates how managed retreat can be more than just a crisis response—it can be a pathway toward restoring health and habitat. We are excited to partner with Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on a plant species inventory project. Using INaturalist, we will be able to map the invasive species in our neighborhood and use that information as part of our restoration efforts. Stay tuned for more updates!

Coverage about our published article on community science projects -- air monitoring using low cost sensors and bio-testing.

Delay in MDEQ air quality monitoring prompts Pascagoula community residents to confirm pollutants on their own.

Part 3 of the Relocation to Restoration blog series shares just some of the benefits this project could provide to nearby residents. A blue-green buffer between residents and heavy industry just makes good sense! It's a win-win!

Cherokee Forest already functions as a de facto buffer between heavy industry and the rest of Pascagoula. Their homes and yards absorbs noise, air pollutants, storm surge, and industrial runoff before nearly any other part of the city.

Part 2 of the Relocation to Restoration blog series tells a story of a neighborhood already in transition because of compounding risks of flooding and toxic pollution.

Project Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) traveled to Pascagoula to gain firsthand insight into the neighborhood’s conditions and contribute their expertise toward developing a strong relocation and restoration plan.
