Over a year has passed, and still, we remember.

The Eaton Fire took more than structures
It shook our sense of place
Tested our spirit
Asked us who we are when everything is on the line.

And West Altadena answered.

Because this Black community was never built on ease
It was built on vision.

On families who chose this place when choice itself was a fight.

On elders who planted roots knowing they might not live to sit in the shade.

On love that looks like staying, even when leaving would be easier.

So one year later, we stand… not untouched, but unbroken.
Carrying memory forward, holding each other up, refusing to disappear.

Fighting to preserve the soul of West Altadena,
to protect a legacy carved out of resistance and care,
to ensure that future generations don’t just hear about this place, they inherit it.

Because we are still here. And we’re not going anywhere.

We Love You Altadena ❤️‍🩹

Today, fire survivors, advocates, organizers, and community leaders traveled to the Capitol to push for urgent recovery legislation and resources for Altadena families still impacted by the Eaton Fire.

Key priorities included:

AB 1642 (EFRU)
Establishing stronger environmental remediation standards for fire impacted communities.

CARE Fund
Expanding funding for rebuild gaps, affordable housing, community land acquisition, and long term recovery support.

Urgent Housing Relief Proposal
Advancing up to $200,000 in emergency housing support for impacted households facing displacement and instability.

SB 87
Ensuring timely insurance payouts so families are not left waiting months or years to recover.

SB 1301
Protecting survivors from being dropped by insurance companies during recovery.

The delegation also met directly with legislators to advocate for faster recovery action, stronger survivor protections, and accountability for communities still fighting to return home.

promised billions for wildfire recovery. Now survivors are being asked to celebrate a new $100M “rebuilding fund” that doesn’t even provide direct cash assistance.

Families are still being told there’s “no money” while funds remain delayed, inaccessible, or sitting in unclear accounts. Where is the urgency from County leadership to demand answers on behalf of the people you represent?

says Gov. Gavin Newsom will propose a new $100-million fund to help wildfire victims afford loans to rebuild their homes under a revised budget plan set to be released Thursday.

Survivors don’t need more financing programs that could push families deeper into debt.
