The Gooden Center

The Gooden Center Since 1962, the Gooden Center has been providing the path to health & wellness for men and women suffering from mental health and substance use disorders.

The Gooden Center offers a rare environment created specifically for men who are on their road to recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. The First Gooden “Recovery Family” was establish in 1962 by five members of Alcoholics Anonymous and Episcopal Bishop Robert Gooden. On a quiet tree-lined street in the historic section of Pasadena, these men created a “Culture of Caring”, a unique environment

where men could “come home to recovery” and escape the ravages of a killer disease: Alcohol and Drug Addiction. The Gooden Center also offers a primary mental health program that is based on the same values and principles. The program is DBT-based and works at meeting clients where they are at and helping them cope and grow from that point. Free Aftercare for life is offered to all clients and their families. We are in-network with most HMO, EPO, and PPO insurances.

Two of the things that make The Gooden Center special are its dedicated staff and clinicians, and the teamwork that goes into providing quality healthcare.

Our team members are grateful for this, and also for fellowship opportunities outside the workplace, such as a recent Los Angeles Angels game at Angel Stadium attended by David Hewlett, chief executive officer, and Mike Dukes, substance use outpatient counselor.

Baseball is the nation’s original pastime, and an occasional example to everyone that good things – and change -- can come if you don’t give up. In the words of Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron: “You may not think you’re going to make it. You may want to quit. But if you keep your eye on the ball, you can accomplish anything.”

Founded in 1962, The Gooden Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that offers residential inpatient treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, outpatient care and transitional housing, and is in network with most HMO, EPO and PPO insurance programs.

Gooden Center clients and alumni are an example of what can be accomplished when those with substance use and mental health disorders find themselves in a supportive community.

The Gooden Center would like to thank Assemblymember Nick Schultz (), who represents the 44th Assembly District, and took the time yesterday to tour our La Crescenta women’s mental health residence and learn more about the work we do. Thanks also to field representative Alex Avanesyan.

Located on a quiet, hillside location north of Los Angeles, it is one of seven facilities. Like the others, it is first and foremost a home, albeit a temporary one, and a place of healing.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1962, The Gooden Center offers residential inpatient treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, outpatient care and transitional housing, and is in network with most HMO, EPO and PPO insurance programs.

Our goal is not only lasting sobriety and a state of mental, physical and emotional stability, but a person interwoven with and contributing to the social fabric. The Gooden Center’s clients and alumni are an example of what can be accomplished when those suffering from mental health and substance use and disorders find themselves in a supportive community.

This week our thoughts are with those impacted by last January’s Altadena and Pacific Palisades fires. The Gooden Center incurred smoke abatement, cleanup and repair costs at our seven facilities – six in Pasadena and one in La Crescenta – as a result of the Eaton fire, but stayed open for business. Many other people and community members, including a number of Gooden Center clients and staff, weren’t so fortunate.
