Criminal Courts Bar Association The Los Angeles Criminal Courts Bar Association was established in 1954 for the benefit of local criminal law attorneys, prosecutors and judges. Clark

The Criminal Courts Bar Association is a county wide organization of criminal defense lawyers in both public and private practice, law students, allied professionals, prosecutors, judges and private individuals. The goals of the Criminal Courts Bar Association are the protection of individual rights and liberties, improvement of the Criminal Justice System, enhancement of the Criminal Law Practitioners, and the continuing education of the Criminal Defense Bar. The Criminal Courts Bar Association enjoys a position of trust and respect in the criminal justice system and has an important voice in the legal community. The Criminal Courts Bar Association will continue to remain active in both professional and civic affairs that are of importance to the rights of those accused of crimes. The CCBA continues to seek the support of our core membership and is looking for new members to continue our strong traditions. For those who are already members, thank you. For those who have not yet renewed please consider doing so now. If you are able, please become a sustaining member. Sustaining Members will be recognized in the monthly newsletter and recognized in the Dinner Dance Program thanking you for your generosity and support for the programs offered by our association. For those of you who have been so long a part of this organization please consider this new category. For those of you who ask, "Why should I join the Criminal Courts Bar Association?" Please consider the words of our past president, David R. Evans:

"Each weekday morning in the courtrooms of this County, men and women of extraordinary courage and dedication rise on behalf of the accused and challenge the representatives of the most powerful nation in the world to prove their case. The work of those criminal defense attorneys is the reason for being of the Criminal Courts Bar Association. Outside those courtrooms, the Criminal Courts Bar Association is their voice. It functions as lobbyist, educator, and cheerleader. Its leaders--its officers and members of the board--are the leaders of the criminal defense bar in the County of Los Angeles. They include the Los Angeles County Public Defender, the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender, the President of California Attorneys of the Criminal Justice, partners from large downtown law firms, sole practitioners, white collar crimes specialist, DUI specialists, and death penalty specialists. They give of their time and money because of their deep shared concern for the rights of the accused and the well being of their advocates. On the second Tuesday of each month, they meet to discuss the pressing issues of the day, to break bread, and to hear talks by the luminaries of criminal practice." Our past presidents:

This week, CCBA President Nina Hodjat and Executive Director Christopher Chaney took a trip down memory lane, exploring CCBA’s rich history and the distinguished judges and attorneys who have shaped our organization.

This issue of the CCBA newsletter dates back to October 2010, when the Honorable Ron Kaye—now serving at the Hollywood Mental Health Courthouse—was our featured speaker. Before taking the bench, Judge Kaye practiced as a plaintiffs’ civil rights attorney.

Over the next several months, President Hodjat, Past President Victor Salerno, and other members of the CCBA Board will continue exploring our archives and sharing more historical treasures that illuminate the people, programs, and milestones behind CCBA’s enduring legacy.

Meet Joshua Acevedo, one of CCBA’s 2026 Law Student Scholarship recipients, pictured with distinguished Board Member, Mauro Quintero🎓⚖️
Joshua is CCBA’s first Latino scholarship recipient and our first recipient who is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran honored with the Bronze Star Medal with Valor for heroism in combat.
Joshua shared:
“I am the first in my family to attend law school and the first to receive a scholarship like this one. It means more to me than I can easily put into words.
“As a nontraditional student with an unconventional path, I did not take for granted what CCBA’s support gave me: the room to focus on becoming a lawyer while graciously offsetting my tuition. Instead of taking a job just to get by, I was able to try out for and make law review and earn a place on the trial team—experiences that are genuinely shaping me into an advocate.
“That is the difference this scholarship made, and I am deeply grateful for it. To anyone considering a gift, you are giving the next recipient the same room to grow into who they are meant to be.”

Meet Nicole Carrasco, one of CCBA’s 2026 Law Student Scholarship recipients 🎓⚖️
Nicole is CCBA’s first Latina scholarship recipient and our first recipient to volunteer as a Child Advocate with the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.
Nicole shared:
“Hello, my name is Nicole Carrasco, and I am currently a 2L at Loyola Law School. As a first-generation student and scholarship recipient, I’m incredibly grateful for the support CCBA has provided. Beyond the financial assistance, it is meaningful to know that there is a community invested in my education, my goals, and my ability to succeed.

Meet Annie Hong, one of CCBA’s 2026 Law Student Scholarship recipients, pictured with our distinguished Board Member Elisa Guadan. 🎓⚖️ Annie is CCBA’s first Asian American scholarship recipient and our first recipient to be on active military duty. She currently serves in the U.S. Army Reserve, is a 2026 graduate of UC Irvine School of Law, and recently completed the California Bar Exam.

Annie shared:

“Receiving the CCBA Scholarship meant a lot to me. I just finished taking the bar exam, and this scholarship made a real difference by easing some of the financial stress during law school and bar prep. Just as important were the connections I made through the CCBA. It was a pleasure meeting and learning from distinguished leaders in the criminal law community, and I really appreciated their support and encouragement along the way.”
