California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Region 6 Desert Bighorn Sheep Crew and the Bureau of Land Management, Needles Field Office is looking for volunteers who are willing to construct Buck and Rail Fence at Crystal Springs in the Kingston Mountains.

There is an existing barbed wire fence at the spring where we have documented an entanglement of a desert bighorn sheep ram and subsequent mortality. In an effort to prevent this from occurring again, we will be replacing the barbed wire fence with buck and rail.

The project will take place on Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th of April. If you are interested in attending, please email Arioch Mgreene at [email protected].

Annual Appeal for SCBS Membership – 2026

On behalf of SCBS, this is an appeal to our valuable followers to consider becoming an ANNUAL member of SCBS. The annual dues paid by each member are very vital to the financial health of the organization. Remember, SCBS has NO PAID STAFF; everyone is a volunteer and all dues and donations go directly towards our work to support wildlife.
How are the membership dues spent? SCBS does not have paid staff, it is an organization of like-minded volunteers, a workforce for nature and the places we love. Everything we do is funded by annual membership dues, grants, and donations. SCBS relies on these funds to pay for things like tools, insurance, postage, our website, publication of the newsletter, and fuel, maintenance & repairs for the SCBS truck and trailers. Funding for our new guzzlers is primarily covered by grants, but those grants don’t cover SCBS’s general operating expenses. Memberships contribute to the financial health of the Society’s efforts, and there are many operational costs that do not qualify for reimbursement by grants. We depend on our members to bridge that gap. Your Annual SCBS membership is the life blood for all of our future projects, please support the efforts of our faithful hardworking volunteers that put themselves out there - to “be the difference” in an ever-challenging environment.

SCBS is a California registered, non-profit organization founded in 1964 and dedicated to the conservation and management of the desert bighorn sheep. For over 60 years, SCBS has contributed immeasurably to make a dramatic and positive impact for desert bighorn sheep by raising funds and public awareness, seeking grants, installing wildlife water sources, improving and enhancing habitat, and working directly with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as authorized agents. Conservation and restoration efforts are undertaken by SCBS in cooperation with the CDFW and the Bureau and Land Management in accordance with the CDFW’s Bighorn Management Plan.

As you may have noticed by now, this is SCBS’s annual membership drive. We have an annual meeting and Board election in May. Please consider joining SCBS using the attached QR Code or join via the website sheepsociety.com.

On behalf of SCBS and all the desert creatures, thank you for your support. Together we can achieve far more as a team than any person can achieve alone.

Respectfully submitted,
Debbie Miller Marschke
SCBS Board Member, Membership & Volunteer Coordinator

Here is a short video of our all volunteer crew hauling water to the Bear Claws drinker on Saturday, August 30th, 2025. We had a good crew and were able to fill the tank. We had great weather too, high reached only 103° as we were finishing. Thank you to everyone who came out to help.

Wow! 4,150-gallons of water hauled to the Newberry Wildlife Water Development (guzzler). This is the 13th water haul in 14-months. Since June 24th, 2024 our volunteers have hauled 33,900-gallons of water to the ~250 bighorn sheep that rely on this water source. Declining ground water levels, invasive plants and increased recreation have all taken a toll on the few natural springs that the sheep have relied on for millenia.

Our friends at Desert Wildlife Unlimited were out hauling water. Over 38,000-gallons was delivered in less than 24-hours. Bighorn sheep rely on these water sources in the East Chocolate Mountains. Natural water sources in the area have run dry or been fouled by feral b***o. DWU volunteers did the hard digging at night, to avoid the scorching sun. All the volunteers donate their time, fuel and wear &tear on their vehicles.

Our friend, SCBS Life Member and volunteer Area Captain, Patrick Yrarrázaval-Correa, has been featured by the Anza-Borrego Foundation. Patrick inspects and cares for three bighorn sheep water developments in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Congratulations and thank you for what you do for California’s endangered population of Peninsular Bighorn Sheep.

From chasing wildflowers in spring to hiking remote canyons and monitoring bighorn sheep, Patrick Yrarrázaval-Correa has spent over 40 years exploring every corner of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. What began as a spark around a campfire during a college ecology class became a lifelong connection ...
