Hey it’s Earth Day today! One day of the many to show appreciation for our plants and our planet 🌏 The superpowers of plants and sun will be shared this Saturday 4/25 from 9-12PM at the second of two free hands-on skills building demonstration workshops this Earth Month at in collaboration with .earth.

Certain native plants have been shown to be beneficial to healing soil of environmental toxins. Through phytoremediation, their benefits are harnessed to sequester and extract heavy metals from soil— a process that is being widely discussed as well as locally applied following the Eaton Fire.

Learn which native plants are being utilized, and how to safely utilize them, to help heal post-fire and other soil contamination, then help plant a small temporary demonstration garden onsite at Arlington Garden.

Organized as part of Arlington’s Post Fire series with SoilWise, the workshop will be led by Dr. Daisy Rosas Vargas and Do Kyung Lee.

Please wear long sleeves, pants and closed toe shoes. Bring a bottle of water as well. Masks and gloves will be available for use, or you may bring your own.

🔗 This is a free workshop with a limited capacity of 20, and advance sign up is requested. Link in bio with details and to sign up. Please, no late entry to this workshop.

This workshop is made possible thanks to a grant from the California Community Foundation.

📸 Slides 2-4: CA buckwheat; western sword fern and giant wild rye;  purple needlegrass and CA fescue; big saltbush and red fescue

Today is a day of mourning and remembrance for our community as we mark the first year since the Eaton Fire took so much of our beautiful Altadena —including its homes, people, air, landscape, and ecology.

This Sunday 1/11 from 10am-12pm, please join us for the next session of AG’s ongoing Post Fire series with .earth as we explore hands on DIY possibilities for restoring soil heath through making ecological filter socks from upcycled fabrics such as burlap and denim.

This hands on demo will focus on the hands on applications of straw and spent oyster mushroom substrate to capture and filter run off during our current rainy season deluge to improve soil health.

The workshop will be led by .daisyrosasv and .

We’ll create and commune together, and great for all ages too.

Workshop is limited to a capacity of 20 people. Please see the link for more information. 🔗

This Sunday 12/14, join Lynn Fang, MS and Maggie Smart-McCabe of .earth and Arlington Garden’s Director of Horticulture Tahereh Sheerazie (aka ) for a hands-on workshop creating ecological filter socks, part of Arlington Garden’s ongoing Post Fire Series to support community restoration and learning after the Eaton Fire.

In part one of this two part series, we’ll learn the techniques of packing a mix of compost, mulch, fungi, and biochar into creative socks made from remnant fabrics such as burlap, canvas and denim.

Filter socks are the long tubes, also known as ‘wattles’, that are helping clear post-fire contaminants by capturing run off through slowing water flow and filtering pollutants—playing an important role in restoring soil ecology.

Make small sock of your own and contribute to a larger collective sock that will be used to help enrich soil health in the area of Arlington’s work shed that burned this summer.

During this “storm of the year,” Arlington Garden is closed during heavy rains like those we had this morning. If you visit during light rain or a break in the storm, please stay off muddy pathways and avoid the inevitable puddling. Walking through mud creates ruts that are difficult to fix and the pathways may be slippery. The eastern side of the garden along S. Pasadena Ave. is more accessible when the garden is wet.

We have sown (and continue to sow) large quantities of wildflower seed during this storm, so expect to see a bunch of cute little seedlings in our planting beds and along pathways in the very near future.
