The latest edition of The Referral speaks to something in which we deeply believe.

This month, Pride and Juneteenth arrive together. Both call us toward the same truth: dignity at the end of life is not conditional. It does not depend on who a patient loves, how they identify, the color of their skin, the language they speak, or the shape of their family.

Our feature explores what LGBTQIA+ inclusive end-of-life care actually looks like in practice — the questions we ask, the assumptions we examine, the ways we show up differently for patients and families who have spent years feeling unseen by the systems meant to care for them.

Our Juneteenth reflection is an honest look at what it means to earn trust across communities where that trust has not always been honored. We take that seriously. Not as a policy position — as a care commitment.

For many patients and families, trust is not given. It's earned. We show up ready to earn it. That's the standard we hold ourselves to.
It starts with a conversation.

Nobody teaches us how to do this part.

How to sit with someone who's dying. How to talk about it before it's urgent. How to think about what a good ending actually looks like — or what living well even means when time gets real.

That's the gap our new podcast, To Know Ends, is trying to close.

Every episode brings in people who've actually been there — hospice workers, caregivers, family members who showed up and stayed. Not to lecture. To tell the truth about what they saw, what surprised them, and what they wish they'd known sooner.

Episode 1 is with Victoria Ivicek, who first came to hospice as a daughter — watching her dad's Alzheimer's move faster than anyone expected. What she found in those last six months didn't look like giving up. It looked like the clearest, most present version of her family she'd ever seen. It changed her life's direction completely.

If the word hospice still makes you flinch, this one's for you.

You take your loved one to every appointment. You track their medications, their screenings, their follow-ups.

But here’s the question: who’s doing that for you?

This Men's Health Week, we’re speaking directly to the men in our community who are caregivers. Your health shouldn't take a backseat just because someone else’s needs feel more urgent.

A simple checkup can catch conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol early, when they’re most treatable.

If you’re under 50, that means a physical every 3 to 5 years. Over 50, once a year. And if you’re carrying the emotional weight of caregiving, talk to your doctor about that too. Support is available.

You know better than anyone how much regular care matters. Apply that same standard to yourself.

This CNA Week, we are proud to shine a light on Akeesha Dotson, Certified Nursing Assistant at our Rebecca Fortney Inpatient Care Center. She is atrue example of what it means to care with your whole heart.

Akeesha brings something rare to her work: patience, humor, love and deep compassion. But her dedication to her patients doesn't stop at the bedside. Akeesha also is a death doula.

For Akeesha, this work isn't just a job. It's a calling. And the best part? Seeing the difference she makes in patients, in families and in the people around her.

Akeesha, we are so grateful for your gentle hands, your compassionate heart, and the immeasurable difference you make every single day. Happy CNA Week!

During CNA Week, we celebrate the extraordinary hearts behind some of the most meaningful moments in hospice care.

Our hospice CNAs are so much more than caregivers. They are the steady, compassionate presence at a patient's side, offering a gentle hand during a bath, a listening ear in a quiet moment and a watchful eye. It is often our CNAs who first recognize a subtle shift in a patient's physical comfort, emotional state or spiritual peace. They bring those insights back to the team so that care can be adjusted with love and intention.

Families tell us again and again that the personal care, presence and tenderness offered by their hospice aide were among the most valuable and comforting parts of their hospice journey. Once you welcome your hospice team into your home, you'll wonder why you waited to call.

If you're wondering whether your loved one might qualify for hospice care, we'd love to talk. Reach out to us today. No one should navigate this journey alone.

From June 11 to 17, the nation celebrates Certified Nursing Assistants. We couldn't be more proud of our incredible team of CNAs .

They are present for the most intimate moments of care: bathing, turning, holding a hand, offering a gentle word. They bring tender, respectful, deeply human touch to every patient, every day, treating each person in their care with the kindness and dignity they deserve.

These thank-you notes speak to the profound difference that kind of care makes for patients and families navigating some of life's hardest moments.

To our CNA team: We see you. We honor you. We are so grateful. Not just this week, but every single day. Thank you.

June is Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month. It's a time to acknowledge the millions of families quietly doing one of the hardest things there is: caring for someone whose world is slowly, irreversibly changing.

One of the things we hear most often is: "We didn't know hospice was even an option."

If you're caring for someone with dementia, we want you to know — it is. We can help you navigate that conversation, at whatever pace feels right for your family.

Asking about hospice isn't giving up. It's advocating for your loved one's comfort, dignity and quality of life.

You don't have to have it all figured out before you call. Our social workers and counselors are here to help with both the clinical and emotional decisions.

What an incredible legacy of love and generosity!

We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated in, supported and volunteered at the Cindy Horsmon Memorial Fun Run. Thanks to this amazing community, the event raised $27,584.20 for the Hospice of the Chesapeake Patient Family Fund in memory of Cindy's memory.

We want to send a special shout-out to Cindy's beloved husband Chris Horsmon, daughter Courtney Horsmon, and dear friend Nicole Foveaux. Their hard work, along with the support of so many family members, friends and community partners, helped make this special day a success.

Thank you for honoring Cindy's memory in such a powerful way. Her spirit continues to make a difference in Calvert County.️
