American Women for International Understanding

American Women for International Understanding AWIU has a wonderful history. We were formed in 1968. For membership application, please visit: http://www.awiu.org/membership/new-member-application-form/

AWIU supports and advocates for the work that women leaders and female-oriented non-profit organizations are doing around the world to build a more just, economically-sound and humane society. Our objective then and now is to encourage people around the world, particularly women, to engage in meaningful dialogue, which helps us understand one another. These efforts are person to person and we believe these small efforts ripple out “in small ways” to make this a better world.

During AWIU’s latest Conversation, Katrina Fotovat challenged attendees to think differently about the systems shaping our future.

“Ultimately, this is a bigger moment than technology,” she said. “We get to choose what our humanity and future looks like.”

The conversation explored the importance of ensuring women and underrepresented communities are included in conversations around AI, digital literacy and the future of emerging technologies.

At AWIU, these Conversations are designed to go beyond headlines — bringing global leaders, advocates and changemakers together for thoughtful dialogue about the issues shaping women’s lives around the world.

From caring for survivors of war to running for president, Dr. Feride Rush*ti’s journey is a powerful example of what courageous leadership can achieve.

A physician, human rights advocate, and 2018 International Woman of Courage awardee, Dr. Rush*ti has spent more than two decades supporting survivors of torture and conflict in Kosovo and advancing justice for wartime sexual violence survivors.

Now, she is taking that commitment to the national stage as a candidate for President of Kosovo.

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Rush*ti and the lasting impact of her work.

We’re excited to launch the first-ever in-person Passport to the Future experience this May with the support of UniHealth Foundation and in partnership with California State University Northridge’s College of Health and Human Development and Ivory Coast Mothers and Children.

On May 30, three students will travel to Côte d’Ivoire to work alongside AWIU micro-grantee Ivory Coast Mothers and Children in a unique cross-cultural learning and service experience centered on global connection, collaboration and community impact.

This is what bridge-building looks like — creating opportunities for the next generation of global leaders to learn directly from women-led work happening around the world.

Stay tuned as we share more from this exciting journey!

“AI literacy is not just about participation, it’s about economic empowerment and sustainability.” — Katrina Fotovat

During AWIU’s latest Conversation, Kat Fotovat explored what’s at stake as AI rapidly reshapes public life — and why women, peacebuilders and underrepresented communities must be part of the conversation shaping what comes next.

The discussion touched on digital safety, access, representation and the growing need for systems built with humanity at the center.

Moderated by AWIU Executive Director Miranda Cohen, the conversation reflected what AWIU Conversations are designed to do: bring global leaders together for thoughtful, timely dialogue on the issues shaping women’s lives around the world.
