This AAPI Heritage Month, weβre proud to recognize Sarah Lau of UFCW Local 3000 β a Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist in Washington whose work plays a critical role behind the scenes of patient care.
With more than a decade of experience in the lab, Sarah helps ensure that the work happening behind the curtain directly supports high-quality care for patients every day.
βI think the lab is truly where I belong,β she says.
As a labor co-lead for her UBT, Sarah works to bring people together across roles and perspectives. Through that work, sheβs seen firsthand how partnership and collaboration can strengthen both the workplace and patient care.
βI really appreciate that we have UBTs and we have partnership,β she says. βI truly believe that a strong partnership benefits both sides, and we can reach our goals faster if we work together.β
From helping deliver excellent patient care behind the scenes to uplifting the voices of often unseen lab professionals, Sarah is passionate about building connection and shared purpose in the workplace.
βComing from an Asian American background, and having parents who immigrated to the US in search of a better life, instilled a desire to help people and give back to society,β Lau says - a perspective that continues to shape how she approaches her work in the lab every day.
She says that there is a deep sense of responsibility that comes with the role, even when it isnβt patient-facing. βA lot of times in the lab, youβre the first person to know that somebody has a condition thatβs going to change their life forever.β
This AAPI Heritage Month, we celebrate Sarah and all AAPI Alliance and Partnership members whose dedication, compassion, and partnership help move patient care forward every day.
