This Sunday, August 23rd, help restore habitat at Cottonwood Canyon in Pasadena! We'll be working to ensure this beautiful area remains a thriving, healthy wildlife corridor.

Volunteers will meet at 9am - please bring work gloves and water, and wear sturdy shoes.

Meet Theodore, our dedicated Friend of Rosemont Preserve! 🌱

Theodore's journey with AFC began as a field trip docent, where he helped educate K-12 students from across Los Angeles County on local ecology. Inspired to become even more involved, he joined habitat restoration events, contributing to the hands-on care of Rosemont Preserve. Recently, Theodore joined the Friends Group of Rosemont, demonstrating his long-term dedication to stewarding the preserve.

From educating the next generation of environmental stewards to restoring native habitat and now taking on a leadership role, Theodore's journey shows how volunteering can grow into a lasting connection with the land and community.

Please bring water and we recommend wearing pants, long sleeve shirts, and sturdy shoes. If available to you, we also recommend bringing a tool such as a shovel, hand pruner, or trowel.

Have you seen this powdery summer berry fruiting in the foothills?

In urban ecosystems where protective cover can be scarce, wildlife rely on dense shrubs like Blue Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana).

Blue Elderberry offers a lot to our local wildlife throughout its seasonal cycles — its fragrant flowers, ripe berries, dense canopy, and unique branch structure offer food and shelter to hundreds of species.

See photos of a Blue Elderberry in bloom at our Cottonwood Canyon preserve, and learn how this plant has supported humans and wildlife across our state for thousands of years.

If you have any of the following tools, please consider bringing them: shovels, spades, loppers, hatchets, clippers. Other tools and equipment will be available.⁠

Join us at Millard Canyon Preserve to help maintain this special place as a wildlife refuge! At the moment, restorations are the only time we allow public access to this fragile ecosystem. See why we're protecting it for wildlife and get involved with the restoration efforts - join us on Saturday, August 8th, at 9am!

If you have them, please bring tools such as w**d whackers, pruners, loppers, or other hand tools suitable for cutting and clearing vegetation.
