Happy ! 🥕🍎🥫

This year’s theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” got us thinking about what makes our Food Pantry a little different.

Our pantry isn’t a handout line. It’s set up like a neighborhood market, where neighbors shop for the groceries that fit their families, their cultures, and their tastes. Through food-rescue partnerships with local grocers and farmers markets, we turn food that might have gone to waste into fresh produce, protein, and pantry staples. Plus, our long-standing relationships with the LA Food Bank and other organizations ensure we have plenty of food to share.

Every week, more than 700 Pasadena and Altadena households shop with us.

So here’s some food for thought: you can help keep those shelves stocked!

🥫 Drop off donations Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

Our GOLD items right now: canned tuna and chicken, hearty soups, peanut butter, cereal, rice, pasta and sauce, and cooking oil.

Not sure what to bring? Donate something you’d like to eat, because chances are someone else will, too!

Doing together what we cannot do alone.

Friends In Deed was featured in Pasadena Now this week for a leadership transition on our Board of Directors.

After a term of steady, thoughtful leadership, Bret Schaefer has passed the gavel to Leslie White, our new Board President. You may already know Leslie from the Food Pantry, where she volunteers. She’s also helped at The Women’s Room and the Bad Weather Shelter, and she brings deep experience in board development, strategic planning, and social advocacy.

We’re also excited to welcome two new board members:

đź’š Joan Laidig, PhD, a retired clinical psychologist, ceramic artist, and longtime Food Pantry volunteer who is passionate about fighting food insecurity

💚 Jessie Mosqueda, a community development and corporate philanthropy leader with 15+ years of experience in grantmaking, public–private partnerships, and economic mobility

Bret, thank you for your dedication to our mission and to our neighbors. We’re so grateful for all you’ve given. 🙏

Today, October 12th, Friends In Deed is closed in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a day to reflect on the history that shapes our shared land and the enduring contributions of Native peoples across the Americas.

May we continue to listen deeply, learn humbly, and stand in solidarity with Indigenous voices today and every day.

In Pasadena’s unhoused community, everyone knows Marco.

He has lived on these streets for years, quietly carrying more than anyone should. Losing most of his sight to glaucoma. A serious medical condition. A girlfriend and her teenage child. Their home: a car.

When our team met Marco, they moved fast. Within two days, we matched him with housing: a Unicorn Unit reserved for individuals whose complex needs make traditional placements nearly impossible. While we finalized the paperwork, he and his family moved into a motel through our Pathways Program. For the first time in a long time, they were not sleeping in a car.

Marco still has a long road ahead. But he is no longer walking it alone.

Swipe to read his full story. 🙏

Every woman deserves to feel beautiful. ✨

The Women's Room was treated to something extra special recently when Charlee's Angels, in partnership with Simply Divine Beauty School, came by to offer complimentary haircuts for our guests, and it was absolutely wonderful to see our ladies getting a little pampering and care.

This is just the beginning! Charlee's Angels plans to return with even more services, including manicures, facials, hair styling, coloring, and more. 💅🌸

Thank you, Charlee's Angels and Simply Divine, for reminding our guests they deserve to feel seen, cared for, and beautiful, because they absolutely do. 🙏

Sometimes the best conversations start with a listener reaching out. đź’š

After hearing our podcast, the team at Camp Graves, a homeless services organization born from the 2021 Mayfield, Kentucky tornado, contacted Rabbi Joshua to connect. In this episode, he sits down with Executive Director Cassy Basham and social work intern Will Elliot to talk about the realities of rural homelessness and the common ground we share in caring for vulnerable neighbors in our communities.

Different places, same mission. 🏡
